One star given because at least the coffee was decent-when you could get it. I have been coming to (& enjoying,) the famous Wellsboro Diner for over 50 years when I've visited Wellsboro. It has been a fondly remembered & much anticipated stop for at least 2-3 meals over a weekend stay. All of that, however, has changed DRASTICALLY. I have no idea what the reason for this is, but this time around, I (& my family, ) were bitterly disappointed. We had breakfast on a busy Saturday morning at the height of "leaf-,peeking" season. We had to wait, which we anticipated, & the wait was about 15 minutes. The hostess didn't once crack a smile or make us feel welcome in any way. Upon being seated, we waited several minutes until the server acknowledged us. After several minutes, she came back with my coffee, which was good. Our order was taken & the wait commenced. I'd say it took about 25 minutes until our order of French toast, pancakes, & an egg sandwich was delivered. The server didn't refill my coffee during that time, despite our best efforts to make eye contact. The food was hot, but horrible. The pancakes were a very light tan-hardly browned, & flat, like they were made from a sub-par mix( not at all like the fluffy, delicious ones I remembered having here,) and the French toast was mushy & nasty. The egg sandwich was barely enough to satisfy a 2 year old. I had been disappointed to discover that the hours of the diner had been drastically reduced and I wanted a hot roast beef dinner for dinner the same evening, so I explained to the server that I wanted one, but asked her to "deconstruct" it so the bread wouldn't get all mushy. She brought it out exactly the way I wanted it, & I was looking forward to the tender, slow-roasted, shaved slices of roast beef nestled between white bread, with good mashed potatoes, all coved in home-made gravy. This is not AT ALL what I recieved. The roast beef appeared to be cold cuts. The mashed potatoes clearly came out of a box, and the gravy from a can. It was NASTY, and I ate 2 bites & threw it away. What a waste! The only good thing was the piece of peanut butter pie I ordered. All-in-all, WE WERE TERRIBLY disappointed & disgusted with our experience., which is a damned shame. This Wellsboro icon seriously need to get their act...
Read moreMy wife and I were visiting this region to check out the PA Grand Canyon for her 60th birthday. During our stay in Wellsboro, I read some reviews that this was supposed to be one of the best, if not the best place for breakfast.
I would beg to differ. I would certainly say our server was exceptional, very attentive, very polite, extremely friendly, and just made us feel really welcome and great during our visit. The atmosphere is very unique, it definitely has that 50's diner feel to it. They have interesting photography and artwork of the history of the area and of that particular business which has been around for quite some time. Just for these reasons I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
However, the food was not that great. We had breakfast, and I did not like the fact that the only two choices of bread were white and wheat, and the bread was gross. I mean, this was store-bought cheap bread even when toasted, it didn't have a crunch to it. They didn't have anything but whole milk, so if you're lactose intolerant or you want a low-fat option, you won't get it here. They also charge an extra dollar if you want an English muffin instead of bread which I find to be ridiculous because every restaurant in the world gives you bread options at no additional charge.
This is just a little idiosyncrasy of mine. The bacon was good the eggs were good, they were cooked properly, but the menu is just very limited here to a very...
Read moreMy girlfriend and I came through the handicapped entrance as she had a walker with her service dog.
I was immediately admonished for using the handicap entrance. As I explained that my friend had a walker and we were wondering if we should just pick a table (handicap seating is on a lower level than the main dining and there weren't any staff down there), the host (cook), reprimanded my girlfriend for having a dog in the restaurant ( he was in a basket clearly marked service dog on both sides). When my girlfriend explained he was a service dog, the staff members insisted that he would have to be on the floor under the table despite the fact that he was on the walker, in a basket, where he could see my girlfriend so he could do his job.
A wonderfully kind waitress tried to make-up for the lack of respect and injustice but we ultimately decided to eat somewhere else.
Also, the clearly marked handicap entrance that goes around back is a hazardous mess. ( admittedly there is one in the front to the other side that we didn't see that appears much safer, but we had already navigated the treacherous path behind the restaurant, which is why I went with my girlfriend because it did not...
