First of all, I had Googled "The best tacos in St Louis", and this place popped up. Since we live near by, my wife and I made it a destination lunch experience.
The Good: The place was clean, had an inviting, smoke free bar and the staff was friendly and efficient. Very pleasant ambiance.
The Bad: The food. It started with the chips and salsa. The chips were flavorless and with the consistency of thin pork rinds, not at all like classic corn tortillas. The salsa was thin, watery and bland. No flavor and not a trace of a vegetable other than it was red like a tomato.
I came for the tacos. I ordered the combo with one beef and one chicken taco and beans and rice. My plate came and the food was gray. No garnish, no visible vegetable and with the house pork-rind tortillas. The beans were gray and runny, and my first reaction was that they looked like joker plastic vomit. The pork-rind tortilla tacos were covered with flavorless, coarsely shredded white cheese with no meat, lettuce or tomatoes visible.
Pico de gallo did not seem to be an option.
The ground beef was gray. No char, no flavor, no texture. The chicken was boiled soup-chicken chunks, and again, no flavor, no char, no texture.
As a bonus, the tacos had been scrunched into the runny, plastic vomit beans and were mushy and had disintegrated, making them impossible to pick up and eat with your fingers.
My wife ordered the taco salad. Again, the presentation was gray. No garnish, no pico de gallo, no guacamole and a mushy, pork-rind taco shell. The same bland, flavorless ground beef.
I am offended when an attractive, seemingly well run restaurant is the purveyor of slop. My wife and I left with the feeling of an overdose of White Castle....Queasy.
It looked like a great place to enjoy monster margaritas, but if you want decent Mexican food, this is...
Read moreVery disappointed in the treatment I received today. An employee who I never saw working there before and whom was at the register was completely disrespected to us and my teenage daughter. He was dishonest about the bill and change given as well as the punch card program they have. He argued about it and when I asked to speak with the manager who is always present and working. He refused to go get him. He kept trying to flirt with my daughter and then said I was lying about the punch card and how many punches were to be given. Something was different today about the service. When the old manager is there everything is perfect the food and the service and everything. But today no refills were given unless we asked for it. The bill was not even presented to us until we asked for it. And the food was served cold when it’s usually steaming hot. Then when we went to pay the bill we were treated like this. Very disappointed and they lost a customer that usually visits them at least twice a week. Something was different today about the service. He ruined it for me and I’m sure for other El Agave customers with his rudeness and lack...
Read moreNice looking restaurant with indoor, outdoor and bar seating. The restaurant and bathrooms were both tidy and clean. We were greeted and seated quickly. The server was quick to bring out our salsa, chips and drinks. We ordered off of the lunch menu which had quite a few options but the prices seemed a little high for the amount of food. Our meals were very lackluster, as other reviewers have said it was just a "meh" meal. My enchilada was literally just shredded unseasoned chicken in a tortilla. Sauce on top with a little cheese. Beans and rice on the side. The other meal we ordered was the shrimp tacos. Literally shrimp in a tortilla with lettuce. No garnish (lime, cilantro or anything) or sauces. We asked for hot sauce (chalula or Tabasco) and we're brought out 2 different salsas in dishes. We saw later that we had been charged for them. When we asked about it the server said "it says on the menu that it's extra". Instead of informing us when we asked for it and just bringing us the condiments we asked for. I won't be back and don't really recommend. We did not try drinks so I can't rate based on that. The stars I gave were for the cleanliness and the outdoor...
