Update: was in the area and desperate for a quick meal. All we wanted were a few bowls of tortilla soup, tamales and margaritas. Sign on the door said that they're not currently serving alcohol. What it should have said was not serving alcohol unless you're Mexican because the guys at the bar sure were enjoying their cervezas. This place is an utter joke. I can't believe I gave it another chance. The advertising all over the place is a really tacky touch, too. Might be time to consider selling the place if it's that big of a struggle.

Removing my original review after getting consistently bad service at Los Portales. My wife and I love the food and still believe it to be some of the best Mexican around but I just cannot handle the poor service anymore. Nobody multitasks. We keep trying and trying to deal with it but I am tired of having to go to the bar to ask for things because the waitress is MIA. One time we were completely left hanging while the waitress went to clean the bathrooms. Had to get the check at the register. This is a family owned and operated restaurant that we have supported since they opened but I don't think we'll return anymore. I don't know what it is about Mexican restaurants around here but they all either have overpriced, bland slop or the service is extremely lazy or both. I have never seen it this bad anywhere else I've lived or visited so it is a...

I really liked the restaurant eating in person but when I ordered to go I ordered extra guacamole and it was definitely missing from my order. I called to tell them not even asking for money back (which I did paid for) or another guac. I was just calling to tell them since I liked the food I wanted to order again but not under those circumstances when I am paying extra and not being compensated. The representative on the phone told me I could come buy more I said, no I already paid for extra and didn’t get it; on top of that my food is at home and I don’t want to get more I just wanted to complain so that next time it would be worth the extra payment. The representative hung up on me! I called back, then she lied on the phone when I called her out on being the same person I just spoke with and completely hung up. This is ridiculous because when I went in there with my kids the day waitress did a very good job. This girl was on her phone when my husband walked in to pick up and is extremely unprofessional. It made me never want to eat there again and that’s a shame because the owner is very nice. Please Just talk to your staff. I am in this industry and that’s...

As you can see from the recent reviews compared to a year ago, this place has definitely gone down hill with their food. We had dinner there last night. Everything seemed slopped together, not fresh at all. The most disappointing thing was the taco salad my daughter ordered. I had asked for beef, it got brought out with chicken like the picture. I pointed out the fact that it was supposed to be ground beef and I would be fine with her just bringing out a bowl of ground beef and I would remove the chicken myself and add the beef. As I spooned the meat into the taco bowl I thought it looked a little...different, but thought oh it's seasoned. Then I saw the pool of grease at the bottom, not juices, grease. I tasted the meat and it tasted like a mix of sausage and something else, something not good. When the waitress returned I asked her what kind of meat it was and her response was "I don't know". Unfortunately we will not...

Some of the most authentic Mexican food in the STL area ... this coming from someone that has been outside of STL and knows what real mexican food is...and if you think El Maguey is mexican food you're strongly mistaken. It's such a charming homey place. They have a bar, plenty of seating, a little grochery, outdoor seating, fresh panquesita, aqua frescas and real heavy icy cold chalices...not mugs...solid frosty chalice. Oh also Coronaritas with fullsize Coronas instead of the baby one they serve at other places...cough cough El Maguey. This place used to be a gas station and behind the bar they still have the original coolers where you can even take some drinks to go. They treat me and my girlfriend like one of their own. I couldn't rate this place any higher. LPs is the place to be.

Awful experience - ordered over $50 worth of food and did not eat more than a few bites it was that bad. It was not a carry out issue either, it was low quality ingredients prepared sloppily and incomplete. Guacamole was watery, bland, and so overloaded with tomatoes that that’s all I could taste. Shredded beef was thick and dry and chewy. Burrito was the same. Everything was just so dryyyy. Even the chips were over cooked and dark brown and completely unsalted! They melted the styrofoam into the food and I didn’t notice this until after digging into the item (see pics, corn cakes container). And lastly, the order was missing two fish tacos. Absolutely unacceptable - I will not be back, and my family agrees!

I came here with my mother for lunch because I’ve always wanted to try and never have when I tell you this place has the best lengua tacos that I’ve had at any other Mexican place even my own, I will definitely be coming back here. The tacos were so good. First off they make exquisite homemade corn tortillas. They’re so soft they make them right before you eat them ! I ordered 12 to take home to my husband who is going to love them. The manager or owner came out and spoke with us and made sure that our food was good, he was very friendly and it’s a nice atmosphere if you want some real authentic tasting food I suggest you stop by and give this place a try!
