Going to Shangri-La on a weekend to enjoy Dim Sum was our family holiday tradition as kids growing up. We always over-ordered a variety of our favorite dishes from the fancy menu, leaving plenty of delicious food to take home to enjoy later. Everything tasted perfect, never had a bad experience. The staff professional, polite, accommodating, tended to needs of the patrons with no complaint. As they push the carts, making their rounds, always checked the tables to offer additional items on the carts and to help clear the tables. Every now and then the owner stopped by tables to check to see how was everything and even help clear the table.
“After” COVID-19, the Shangri-La ambience changed drastically. Immediately went downhill. The carts were the first thing to go. The fancy Dim Sum menu was reduced to an amateurish 2-sided laminated card showing poor quality photos with significantly less selection that left nothing to the imagination. For a moment I felt I was sitting in one of those mediocre convenient gas station restaurant stops before you get back on the highway. It didn’t take much to kill the mood. Just a couple of major changes that quickly degraded the once were most glamorous popular hot spots in hobnobbing West Bloomfield Twp., where authentic homemade Asian dishes always warmed your heart, turned the dining experience into an instant tragedy. I rather watch Madame Butterfly 20 times back-to-back and I hated it the 1st time. Food was bland, arrived cold, sizes smaller, portions smaller, less to hardly any meat, food reminded me of pre-made microwave-to-table.
The new owners really need to get it together. Here’s a helpful clue. First they need to read all the reviews. Second, they need to respond to the reviews; be humble, show the patrons they truly care about the concerns. Third, they need to commit to putting feasible action plan in place to fix what’s broken. It’s not all about them. It’s all about the community. They owe it to the long-standing community who’s been around a lot longer than they have; to do their part upholding the highest standard. Maybe one day, they will win...
Read moreWriting this review because it’s stopped me from coming here and it’s bothered even though it happened 3 months ago. I came here with a friend who was visiting, I’ve been to this location many times before and wanted to give them a good dim sum experience. Our waiter sat us and we were chatting for 5-6 minutes catching up. During that time the waiter came by to ask if we were ready to order food or drinks. We got water but needed more time to look at the menu. We’re still chatting and looking over the menu, mind you he’s standing two tables across from us staring waiting. He comes and asks in a irritated tone and we start giving our order. One of things we ordered was crispy fried chicken, my friend told him and I interrupted bc my friend forgot to say that we wanted a half order of it. The waiter looks at me annoyed and asks me several times if that’s what I wanted and that’s what I meant…several times in a tone. I said yes just clarifying the half order of the chicken and he scoffs and walks away. He comes back slamming the food down on the table and we never say him again after that. As we ate a women was waiting on us for the rest of our meal. I have no idea why the waiter responded like that, from the moment we walked into the restaurant he seemed annoyed by our presence. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable before and I haven’t been backs since. I’d never seen him in the past so I don’t think he’s usually a waiter, maybe the owner or kitchen staff that was helping out that day. Now mind you it was like 3:00 on a Friday and there were only 2 other tables of...
Read moreTried this place because it had good reviews but it wasn't very good.
I ordered the Generals Chicken dinner combo. The sauce was thick, way too sweet and not very flavorful. I would not call it Generals Chicken. The fried rice was bland. The egg roll was average.
I'll give them an honorable mention for including spicy Mustard without my needing to ask.
My daughter ordered the Orange Chicken dinner combo. There appeared to be a few orange tinds in the sauce but there was no orange flavor whatsoever to this meal. I already mentioned the fried rice and egg roll.
We also ordered some pan fried dumplings as an appetizer. They were average in flavor, maybe a little above with the sauce - but they were also giant, odd looking, and a bit on the oily side.
Overall it was just not a very good experience. They have a nice online ordering system but it allows for zero customization, so no leaving out what you don't like or adding to a dish unless you call.
I was initially very excited about finding Shangri-la because of the Dim Sum. There are not many places to get it in the area and they have a nice selection, but as this was my first visit I went with standard dishes that anch Chinese restaurant should do well.
The search for decent Chinese food I Metro...
