First time visiting this place.
My daughter and I are going to John Mayer's concert in the United Center. We wanted to eat first before going to the concert. We both agreed to try Forbidden Root.
At first, because of the name, we thought it's a Vegan place or a place to eat just veggies or some healthy spot for healthy folks. We're wrong. It's a Gastropub. And, we're both glad we visited the place.
Our first impression as we walked in... We're surprised how spacious it felt. From the outside, it didn't look like it.
We're seated right away. It's a Thursday night. We're not expecting a lot of people and we're able to park right in front!
Place got lots of beers and some cocktails to choose from. I told my daughter I'd like to have a place like this I can walk to after work.
We looked at the menu and we decided to try their beer flights, 6-piece chicken wings, and split a burger + fries.
The beers tasted good. However, there were two I didn't like. One was a bit sour. The other beers were good with food.
The wings was pretty good. Liked the spice. Not too spicy. I like there's a bit of cilantro and some crisps on top when served. The sauce is their spin. Liked it. The burger was very good. We informed our server we like it cooked medium and they delivered. Love that. I don't like it when they ask you how you'd like your burger or steak cooked and they don't deliver. Why bother asking if the person preparing the food can't deliver!
The French fries were cooked perfectly and tasted delicious. When French fries they serve are cooked perfectly and tasted delicious, it shows they care what they serve to their guests. I'm sure you've been to places where a simple order of French fries disappointed you.
We like the place, the atmosphere, the food, the drink selection, our server (He's not pushy. Left us alone. Only visited when he thinks we may need something.) The people/guests who're in the place were pretty good too. Overall, it's a place I'd/we'd go back to.
I look forward to dining and drinking there again.
Give Forbidden Root a try. We had a pleasant experience. ...
Read moreI was so disappointed with my most recent trip to forbidden roots. The beer is always great and food is good but the service today was terrible. My husband and I arrived with our baby a few minutes after opening. There was one bartender, one server and one manager on the floor. The bartender came quickly to take our drink order and explained that there was a large table (of about 12 people) that the server was helping and then she would be right over. Besides the large table there were 2 other tables and ours. The server (Bar B according to our receipt) stopped over before we got our beers for the food order and we asked for another minute. She didn't come back for another 15 minutes, but we understood that we asked for more time. We placed an order for burrata (a no cook dish) as a starter which took over 25 minutes to come to our table. In this time, no one checked on us. I had to find the server to ask if she could check on the burrata all the while or son was getting fussy from hunger (yes, he eats burrata and bread). After we had the burrata, we decided we didn't have enough time to order more food so we asked for the check which took another 10 minutes before we even had the bill in hand. When we went to pay with credit card, we were told the credit card machine was down. We paid with cash before realizing that we were still charged the 3% credit card...
Read moreA century old building but a year young business. The building is a piece of nostalgia. It is over 100 years old and opened as The Hub Theatre in 1913, featuring a single screen, with 600 seats, a front lobby, candy counter, and double feature screenings. Today it's a botanical brew pub with a very upscale but relaxed atmosphere. In the spirit of full disclosure I had to look up what goes into a botanical brew. Bark, stems, flowers, herbs, spices, leaves, roots, and other foraged flavors have long been part of beer. Brewers in early America crafted low-alcohol beverages, infusing them with locally available botanicals like ginger, dandelion, burdock, and horehound. I'm not a beer guy but this sounds intriguing and the place was packed. The menu is small but focused. My daughter and I chose a Kale & Spinach Salad, Ora King Salmon served on Black Rice, Carrot Ginger Broth, Bacon Chutney, Dill, along with an 8 oz. Burger accompanied with Giardiniere Mayo, Aged Cheddar, Onions, B&B Pickle, on a Brioche Bun. The entrees were excellent. Our service was good and the prices are representative of an upscale Chicago restaurant. If you enjoy good food, great atmosphere, and a craving for a botanical beer this is...
