JJ Thai Street Food is a hidden gem I stumbled upon while exploring Ukrainian Village, and while it may not have completely won me over as a Thai food enthusiast, it certainly had its highlights.
First and foremost, the service at JJ Thai Street Food deserves a standing ovation. The staff was attentive, friendly, and genuinely passionate about sharing their cuisine. They made the dining experience enjoyable from start to finish.
The atmosphere in the restaurant is wonderfully chill, providing a comfortable setting to savor your meal. The aroma of the food wafting through the air had my taste buds tingling with anticipation.
Now, let's talk about the food. I decided to order a variety of dishes. The grilled squid was decent, though it didn't quite bowl me over - but hey, maybe grilled squid just isn't my thing.
The homemade chicken balls, on the other hand, didn't quite tickle my taste buds the way I'd hoped. Taste is subjective, and while some may love them, they didn't align with my palate.
However, there was a shining star in my meal - the basil seafood with rice. It was a delightful explosion of flavors, with the perfect balance of spice and freshness. If I were to visit JJ Thai Street Food again, this dish would definitely be at the top of my list.
In conclusion, JJ Thai Street Food offers a pleasant dining experience with impeccable service and a charming atmosphere. While not every dish may have been to my taste, the basil seafood alone makes it worth a return visit for those craving authentic...
Read moreFirst off let me say all the reviews complaining about portion size are all heavily American and are used to the American way of copious amounts of food. That being said I had a great experience dining in here. Came in on a Monday evening and sat right down. Our server was super nice and attentive. We ordered an app (dumplings) and 2 entrees (pork belly with rice and crispy chicken with rice). Dumplings were palm sized and delicious, very flavorful and served with the best sweet chili sauce I've ever had. My bf said the pork belly was nice and crispy, and served with a spicy sauce that really took it up a notch. I really liked the crispy basil chicken. I will say it is served with sautéed basil on top but it could be a bit more basily for the sauce, never the less was still very flavorful and crispy and I added a sunny side crispy egg and omg absolutely delish. I got a Thai iced tea to take home, how could I not? DELISH! As far as location of the restaurant, it's a trendy area with good amount of street parking. And the restaurant itself offers a few outdoor tables, but if you byob you cannot sit outside due to no offsite liquor permit. Inside was nice and cool with a fun view of the kitchen. Clean and quaint. Overall...
Read moreJ.J. Thai Street Food is a small, bustling restaurant along West Town’s busy W Chicago St serving up classic Thai street food staples. Try to make a reservation for popular dining times— my friends and I forgot to do so and waited ~45 min for a spot on a Friday night. The space is small and intimate, with limited seating.
I tried the following dishes: SP3 Tum Khao Pho (Corn Salad): This had a flavor profile similar to papaya salad— quite spicy and a little sour.
A9 Gui Chay Tod (Tapioca Dumplings with Chives): This was really good— they make the tapioca skin crispier and stickier / more glutinous than many Thai places, which I really liked. The chive flavor was just right and not overpowering.
N4 Bamee Hang Moo Daeng (Egg noodles with BBQ Pork without broth): A simple staple dish, these noodles were nice and buttery but overall the flavor was kind of lacking. I think I would’ve preferred noodles with broth, so that’s on me… the flavor and fullness just felt incomplete without a hearty broth.
Most entrees are between $14-18. Although I wasn’t wowed, I haven’t seen too many specialized Thai street food spots in Chicago, and I’d definitely be down to come again to try other dishes on the...
