I'm able to give 5 stars because my criticisms are only based on my own nit pickin and is unfair to deduct a star because this place is AWESOME! Great staff, appealing environment, the sauces are a treat in themselves. The flavors are spot on, great cuts of meat, decent portions, and price is appropriate for the quality of food. The fact they serve sweet tea in Chicago is an anomaly in itself but, and the ability to give you diabetes after one gulp is a staple for anyone from the south to enjoy with good BBQ (it's insanely delicious). The (cold smoked?) Brisket is not something I'm used to when eating BBQ, I'm used to the fat melting into the meat during the long smoking process, causing it to fall apart once you take a bite, with that being said, cold smoking is a real art form, and they've nailed it, so if that's your cup of tea, this is the place for you! The collards are top notch, cooked just right, just firm enough yet cooked long enough so you get all of the flavors that come out after cooking the hell out of them with ham hocks (this is also an art, you have to cook them a very long time to get the flavor, yet you don't want them mushy, again they nailed it) 5 stars, great place, thank you for such a...
Read moreChicago BBQ should always be taken with a grain of salt, it's not the best compared to other offerings in the country, but there are definitely places that stand above the others. We arrived at Lillie's Q for an early dinner on a Thursday night and we were promptly seated outside. To start, we ordered the fried pickles with a side of ranch while our dining companions ordered the boiled peanuts. The appetizers came out scary fast, like within a minute (no exaggeration), but they were obviously just made, which made them fresh and delicious. The pickles had a nice crunch to them, but I was overall not that impressed with them. The flavor profile was kind of bland. For dinner, my fiance and I split the pound of tri-tip with a side of beans and sweet potato fries. The server went over the sauce offerings, and the mayo based sauce went wonderfully with the sweet potato fries. We enjoyed trying all of the sauces from the Carolina to the Spicy sauces, all of which slightly changed the flavor profile of the meat. The sweet potato fries were perfectly crispy and the beans were flavorful, I'd highly recommend these sides. The service was prompt, friendly, and attentive, so no complaints...
Read moreThe Place Lillie's Q is located in Bucktown or in the Wicker Park area if you will at 1856 W North Ave, Chicago, IL. Nice up beat fun atmosphere area at 's this urban barbecue shack. The decor is very rustic but with a warm southern charm. There is a small outdoor eating area which is nice when the weather permits and space is available.
The Menu Typical Southern BBQ menu on the surface. We had a rack of ribs, 1/2 bbq chicken, brussel sprouts, and sweet potato fries. They were out of green beans. A couple of observations vs a true southern smokin pig style menu. The size of the sides is without a doubt small. A true southern place would have Jalapeño grits, loaded potato casserole, and fried okra. Our ribs were tasty and the rub was good. The chicken was nicely done as well. The sides were disappointing.
The Experience/Value/Service Our service was good. The price was slightly high on the entrees but somewhat reasonable when compared to the value delivered. The sides were over priced and tiny. Overall it was a good experience. I know this restaurant has multiple locations but with a little more focus on the menu and the sides this place could be a true...
