With a trip to Detroit, Michigan coming up later in the year, I identified Lola's Coney Island as having an item known to Detroit as the coney dog, which I say looks like a chili dog topped with mustard and onions. I contemplated on visiting this restaurant for weeks, but got the urge to visit after a gym workout on the weekend. While pulling into the parking lot I felt that I lucked up during this visit because I barely snagged a parking spot in their small private lot. With that I recommend choosing wisely when you visit or else you will be subjected to neighborhood parking which is an option as well.
Being in the restaurant, I felt as though it is the perfect takeout spot or a spot you would visit with a small group of friends, but certainly not a party group because there is just not enough seating inside. And if you are visiting during the summer, Lola's does have outdoor seating with patio umbrellas if you wish to eat outdoors.
Prior to visiting I had already known what I wanted, but still looked at the menu thoroughly which consisted of hot dogs, sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads, shakes, drinks, and a kids menu. As for my order, I ordered a Detroit style dog w/ chips and a grape Faygo. And as I ate, I scrolled through the menu again and got the urge to try a peanut butter shake out of several other flavors on the menu. I must say that it was very delicious! And I am quite positive that I will have more cravings of it in the future leading to a return, so beware of their peanut butter shake, or else you will become addicted, hehe.
I made it no secret to the employee that I would be returning to try their Maine Lobster Roll, which initially I declined due to being unfamiliar with its price and portion given after the employee made mentions of there being extra left. The Maine Lobster Roll is an item specifically sold on Friday's. And definitely too much to handle for just one individual visiting, FYI. Later while doing my research, I found that Lola's Coney Island opened March of 2019, which is not too far off from my visit. Do I recommend? Yes,...
Read moreI recently catered in Lola’s Coney for a surprise for husband Detroit-born husband. Having been to Lola’s before, my husband and I knew that their coney dogs were authentic Detroit coney! The team was so easy to work with and super sensitive to my need to text instead of call (due to the surprise factor) and helped walk me through how many coney dogs they recommended I order for the size of the party. Leading up to and on the day of the party, they were in constant contact, confirming my order and then communicating arrival time. They were SO kind to wait a few extra minutes after the surprise was over for me to run out and grab the food! (Surprise party timelines never go quite as planned). The big kicker was as the food was being handed off to me, they shared that they had included some Better Made chips because they knew it was a birthday party and that the birthday boy was from Detroit. When I got inside I realized they had provided me TWO boxes with so many different flavors of Better Made. The food was a hit and we turned many people into coney dog lovers as they’d never sampled the delicious Detroit treat before. I have to say the most rewarding part of the party was hearing all of the Detroit born family members rave about the authenticity of the coneys for this Detroit themed birthday.
If you are from Detroit, or have ever eaten a coney dog in Detroit, you gotta make your way to Lola’s. Their food is amazing.
If you’re ever hosting a party - highly recommend Lola’s. Their customer service was excellent, super helpful as I shared my budget and guest list regarding what I would need, and everything came ready to go and...
Read moreI finally made my way to Lola's Coney Island after passing by for months, and let me tell you, it was well worth the wait. Having been to Detroit multiple times, I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur when it comes to Coney Dogs, and Lola's did not disappoint.
While the chili wasn't an exact match to what I've had in Detroit, it came impressively close. But let's be clear, I'm not complaining in the slightest. In my humble opinion (and to my Detroit friends, please don't come for me), a Coney Dog is essentially a chili cheese dog. I've had this debate countless times, but my stance remains firm.
I opted for takeout and added a side of cheese-drenched fries to my order. The fries were a revelation - crisp, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. The cheese had a unique blend of seasonings that elevated it beyond the ordinary. It was a delightful departure from your standard cheese.
The restaurant itself exudes a cozy, neighborhood joint vibe and is impeccably clean. It's the kind of place that instantly makes you feel at home.
I can say with certainty that I'll be returning for my Coney Dog fix. Having never come across a spot in Chicago that serves up these Detroit delicacies, Lola's has now become my go-to. A special shoutout to the friendly and pleasant staff member who took my order - it added an extra layer of warmth to the experience.
For my fellow Detroiters living in Chicago, if you're on the hunt for an authentic Coney Dog, look no further than Lola's. You won't be...
