Mixteco Grill (Wicker Park) — Restaurant in West Chicago Township

Dang, i’m so bummed to leave this review.

I’ve been going to this place since they opened a few years ago. This past Sunday, I went with my family and we dined it, I usually get it to go. There were four of us, and we ordered at the counter then sat down. When we ordered at the counter, my uncle had asked for a side of salsa for his fajitas, not chips and salsa, just the little sides that they normally give you at a Mexican restaurant. the woman who checked us out said no problem and that she’d bring over a few different kinds with our food. We also ordered the queso app, which was very good but came with very few chips for four people.

We got the queso first, and finish the chips in a matter of minutes with lots of queso left. When our food started coming out, I asked if we could get some more chips for the queso and the small couple sides of salsa.

The woman then came back with no chip or sides of salsa, but the iPad telling me i owed $8.50 for a side of chips and salsa. It was so awkward. I tried to explain to her that’s not what I wanted, but felt so uncomfortable that I just ended up paying.

She was so rude and knew that wasn’t what I was asking for.

This is after spending $88 for four people and tipping 22% at the counter. It’s not even a normal restaurant situation where you have a waitress so it’s pretty overpriced. i couldn’t believe the attitude.

Food is pretty good, prices fair, but service when ordering for pickup/doordash was a very bad experience.

Ordered on doordash as I had 20 bucks in coupons. Otherwise I would have ordered directly through them. Had A pickup window of 20 mins when ordering which then as I confirmed the order switched to over an hour. Decided to call at the 25 min mark to find my food already done. Get home, food was well Cold and clearly had been sitting for a long while. Also, I paid extra to have a side of rice and beans which was forgotten. ( I only live 3 minutes drive so my drive didn't add significant time).

I'll order in person next time and give the place a try again. Shrimp was very good on nachos, beef was okay. Chipotle sauce was perfect and overall quality seems high.

To the owners, if you are not going to give full effort to doordash orders, then don't sign up with them. Your food seems more than good enough plus your website ordering is solid. I will raise my review to a expected 5 stars when I try again soon with fresh food.

Overall Thoughts: I ordered pickup from Mixteco Grill, and not only does the food come out within minutes, it’s also strikingly delicious, flavorful, and priced fairly. When you order pickup on their website, you can also opt to use either their 10% coupon or spin to win a free appetizer. I’m generally not a big takeout person, but this is definitely a top spot that I’ll order from again in the future-- I’m eager to try more of their menu!

Food I tried: Craft Taco Lunch Special— Baja Fish & Grilled Shrimp Tacos (4.7/5): These 2 tacos were fire. The sauces were sharp and creamy, and the fish/shrimp were fresh, bursting with flavor, and really just melted in the mouth.

Tofu Fire Quesadilla (4.7/5): Although I can’t say I’ve had too many quesadillas in my life, this was among the best I’ve ever had— especially for a tofu quesadilla, which is rarely amazing in my experience. This tofu was well-seasoned though, and packed with rich, savory flavor. —
