I had a wonderful time at the Boiler Up Bar, which is attached to the Union Hotel at Purdue University. I was on a solo business trip and dined there on my own, but I never felt lonely thanks to the friendly and attentive bar staff. They went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and comfortable, and they even created custom cocktails for me based on my preferences.
Ashley Alyssa and Sienna were excellent servers who were always smiling and checking on me.They were amazing and provided great conversation and recommendations for local attractions They made me feel like a valued guest. Ashlyn was another superb bartender that went above and beyond to make me feel at home. She has a competition-winning drink on the menu that to me is excellent. She was very passionate and knowledgeable about her craft, and that passion shines in the excellent drinks she made. The drinks were absolutely delicious and creative. While I was there, Ashlyn crafted a custom whiskey sour for me and explained her process. Ashley Alyssa also created a honey ginger whiskey drink as a night cap for me and it was excellent. It was spicy, warming and an item that needs to be on the menu. I enjoyed the music and the cozy atmosphere of the bar as well. The food was also incredibly tasty and fresh. I tried the crab croquettes, the burger, the scallops, the lobster and shrimp roll, the beet salad and the breakfast steak and eggs. The scallops were my favorite menu item. I was less enthused about the yellow beets in the beet salad since it was more earthy and lacked some of the sweetness you would get with red beets but the other elements are excellent. Also, the breakfast steak and eggs was delicious but could use improvements since the steaks seemed over salted and the eggs seemed unsalted. One of the chefs came to check on me during the lunch service to make sure everything was to my liking. He was very courteous and professional.
I would definitely visit this place again since i believe they have the best cocktails in the area. The bartenders know what they're doing here! If they institute a happy hour then this place would be off the charts. Also, would want them to not run short on ingredients for some of the more popular drink. All in all, I strongly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing and enjoyable lunch or dinner. Food and Drinks are very...
Read moreI had high hopes for this restaurant, thinking it would be the perfect place for a special birthday dinner with my boyfriend, but it turned out to be an utter disappointment. From the moment we stepped in, the experience was off-putting. The first thing we noticed was a foul smell of dirty rags at the entrance, and sure enough, there was a trash can with a smelly cloth draped over it right by the door. Once seated , we were taken to a dimly lit, isolated corner that made the atmosphere feel more like a neglectful diner than a fine dining establishment. The service was abysmal. Our server barely checked on us throughout the meal. After looking over the menu, we waited over 15 minutes for him to come back, but he was too busy chatting with other staff members. I had to wave him down forcefully just to get his attention to take our order. To make things worse, he left the menus on our table the entire time and didn't even bother to ask us how the food was once it arrived. Meanwhile, he was overly attentive to the table next to us, which was loud and disruptive, completely ruining any hope for a romantic atmosphere. The food itself was shockingly bad for the price. We spent over $150 for two people. The scallops were flavorless, and the mushrooms served with them were bitter. The only redeeming part of the meal was the dessert. To top it off, the restaurant didn't even meet the most basic expectations of fine dining. The tableware was dirty, and bread—something that's usually served as soon as you're seated—wasn't brought out until after our appetizers arrived. It felt like the server had completely forgotten about us. In Lafayette, I could have had a much better dining experience for half the price. This restaurant not only failed to meet fine dining standards but also ruined what should have been a memorable birthday dinner. I deeply regret choosing this place and would never recommend it to anyone. Save your money and...
Read moreFirst off, I would just like to say that this review has nothing to do with the food, which was fantastic. It is purely based on service.
As a summary for the review, the food was excellent and tasted delicious, but I’ve never received such poor treatment at a “higher class” establishment.
I don’t want to speculate, but very upsetting to me that simply because I am young or not dressed in expensive designer clothes that I receive worse/poorer treatment from the wait staff. I also have 6 years of food service under my belt, along with serving, so I don’t understand where the severely poor treatment originated from. We waited at the door and the restaurant was not busy. There were multiple servers on the floor to compensate and we were spoken to by the hostess, and then by what looked to be a manager due to the long wait.
Once seated (in a dark corner of the restaurant with a picture included for proof), our waitress spoke casually with us and then took our orders. We were not checked up on as far as drink refills (we couldn’t even order a second because the waitress didn’t check on us), and we were not asked how the food tasted. Fortunately, the food was fantastic, but I’ve never felt so ignored in a restaurant. Additionally, there were multiple tables in the restaurant that hadn’t been cleared, and our plates were left on the table despite our waitress interacting with all of her other tables and conversing with them while ignoring us.
I am visiting from Florida and my partner is doing a paid research program with the local university, and regretfully neither of us have any intention of returning. I regret to write a review so negatively charged, and if you see my other reviews, I really like to build up local businesses and support successful and kind establishments.
I have included photos of the food as well as the ambience of the restaurant to...
