I visited this restaurant early, just after they opened so that may impact my review. The location is easy to get to from the Northbound side of Route 1, if you are coming from the Southbound side its more difficult with the never ending construction.
I ordered the Fried Chicken Sandwich and the MTQ Beans. The sandwich was very large, two chicken breasts, covered with cole slaw and siracha mayo. The slaw has a sweet relish in it and the Siracha sauce was sweet. The sweetness of those two were a bit too much for me but that was negated by the fantastic chicken. The chicken was perfectly dusted in a tasty cornmeal and cooked to perfection. The roll was average at best, but overall the sandwich is fantastic, tasty, juice, well put together and seriously filling. The MTQ beans were perfect, a good solid bean base topped with awesome beef brisket. The brisket to bean ratio was about 40/60 and it was really good. There is no doubt that this will be a steady side for me.
Now the reason i didn't give this restaurant 5 stars: the interior. The place is dark, which I understand that the owner wants a certain ambiance, but I don't think it is helpful for older folks. The biggest issue was that the employees had stuff everywhere. The seating bar was being used to prep food (filling sides of sauce, ketchup, etc.) and other prep work for takeout. The first table as you walk in had a laptop on it and several clipboards. This is not welcoming, it's downright rude. Do your work elsewhere, these locations are for customers who are paying to be there. The socially distanced setup of the tables was great, the employees were very nice and helpful, the food was prepared perfectly and quickly. There's no doubt I'll return, but they have to move their office and food prep...
Read moreVisited March 30th for a dinner pick up order, here's an honest review: Being from Texas (but long time NJ resident now) and knowing what great brisket is I still laugh a little at any restaurant in the NYC area that says 'Texas style' anything.. ditto for "NYC style bagels" advertised elsewhere. But you gotta give folks a chance, especially when you have wicked craving for some home style grub. I did and was actually impressed enough about the brisket (and sides) quality, it tasted fine, was moist and portions were decent.. really enjoyed it and will return when I need another fix. Only mild criticism it's that it's not smokey with a deep rich flavor which is actually almost half the magic of a delicious smoked Texas meat.. but I can't expect anyone up north to have piles of mesquite wood around to slow smoke their meats with either. Just add a pinch of salt & pepper and you'll be fine.
Want to give kudos to the staff who was hustling during the post peak dinner rush, and especially the younger guy handling the register and greeting walk in customers alone. He was sharp, friendly, calm, and juggled the front half of the store business seamlessly while making sure the cook and prep guys filled the orders right. Nice seeing a young guy taking pride in doing honest work and is earning real life skills (..not sitting around watching TikTok all day while trading crypto like some of his peers age group, tsk tsk). Didn't catch his name but hope management here recognizes his talent. He's definitely an asset to...
Read moreOMG. This place has gone so far downhill in the last few months it's uncanny.
First, when you walk in, there are several signs indicating this is one of the failing trend of restaurants which charge a 3.5% surcharge for paying via credit card. That's a turn-off right away. Second, the menu has been augmented since our last visit with some appealing-sounding dishes, such as Texas Chicken-Fried Steak (served with gravy, beans and cornbread). We both decided to give it a try. BIG mistake. The chicken-fried steak wasn't even fit for an animal (see later). Well over-cooked with a thin layer of semi-burnt breading - and no gravy. We had to ask twice to get the advertised gravy and when it came, it was thin, weak and oily - nothing like the viscous white gravy one expects with CFS. Trying to cut into the meat was laborious - extremely tough and fatty. Inedible, in fact. The beans and (northern-style) cornbread were fine. In fact, the cornbread was many times more moist than the meat. At the end of the meal, the server asked how it was and we didn't hold back. No apology was offered for the poor quality and he more or less just blew us off - no discount for terrible food, either. Upon getting home, I assessed whether the remains were fit for a dog. I scraped off the burnt breading to reveal one piece of meat which was fully 2/3 fat. It was absolutely horrible and was not even fit for a dog. We will not be returning and are actively spreading the word regarding how far downhill this place has gone in a relatively...
