I hate to be that guest for the review I am about to give, but I had such high hopes for this restaurant and was sadly disappointed. Since it opened I have been wanting to go and today I finally treated myself to it. I was offered any seat I wanted so I chose a booth which was nice even though a friend of mine and her fiance were told they only seat 3 to a booth and that they had to sit at the bar or one of the square tables. The young lady brought over the standard chips with the sweet dip to munch on and asked me if I needed more time to look over the menu even though I had practically just sat down. I asked about MSG and if they used it in all their dishes. She didn't know too much about it, but stated she would put in on the slip of my order just in case. I have been on a strict diet and wanted to treat myself and still stay within some healthy choices. I do not know too much about MSG myself expect that it seems to fill you up faster than you would without it. I'm not sure if they excluded it from my dish or not, but I ordered the General Taos chicken which came with a fired rice and Crab Rangoon. The order took place at 2:55. I was more impressed with how quickly the order made it to the table than the actual food. It couldn't had been more than 5 minutes and my food was ready. I was hoping to get a nice hot meal after being out in the cold nearly all day. The wind is strong and it's around 25 degrees outside and the windchill made it feel more like 15. When I recieved my food the Crab Rangoon was definitely cold. The center felt almost frozen in the one I ate and the other two were cold to the touch. I tried to get someones attention, which I did get, but noticed a young man sitting on the counter top while another waitress were at the bar. The waitress did provide another set suggesting that those where fresh, but it was out in under a minute which suggests to me it wasn't fresh at all. The combination dish didn't really have much heat to it either. Temperature was luke warm to cool with the exception of the sauce and veggies. It had probably been 10 minutes and the young waitress asked me if I needed a box. With the condition of the food and the feeling of being rushed I said "yes, that would be great" because at that point my "treat" was ruined and I didn't want to sit there anymore. I probably had eaten 10% of my plate. My entire experience lasted maybe 20 minutes. I did overhear the waitress mention to other patrons that they don't offer free refills which I thought was silly. I did however leave a tip which brought my total to $20.00 I'm sure everyone's experience is different, but speaking for myself I was quite disappointed, and I'll probably skip going back if I get the urge again for Chinese food. There's 2 to 3 other places in town that I can go which are in...
Read moreWe visited the Dragon Palace last night for dinner. We were a little concerned because the restaurant of the same name located in Wakefield is horrible. This is certainly not the case with the Dragon Palace in Westerly. A little background. We arrived at 5:15 unfortunately just behind a group of 20 that showed up without a reservation so service was a little slow. The waitstaff made a heroic attempt to keep things moving and, in fact, they did a great job. I ordered a Stoli Martini and the bride (of 51 years) had some Sake. Despite the crowd both arrived on time and were excellent. For appetizers we had steamed dumplings and a sushi roll. The 6 dumplings were huge and perfectly cooked. We could only eat 4 but that is Ok because there is always tomorrow. The sushi roll was also huge. 12 pieces instead of the usual 6 or 8. It was great. For dinner I had the General Tso’s chicken extra spicy. It came with brown rice and crab Rangoon. I have ordered this dish at every Asian restaurant within 30 miles of here and this was by far the best. Large chunks of chicken with a crunchy outside and perfectly cooked inside. Possibly the best I have had anywhere. The bride had chicken with eggplant and spicy garlic sauce. Again, excellent and huge portions. Kudos to both the wait staff ( 2 ladies) and the kitchen staff for handling such a large unexpected in flux. We will be back weekly until we return to Florida...
Read moreMy husband and I moved to the area at the beginning of 2024 and have, since then, been on the hunt for good Chinese food. Coming from the NYC / Northern NJ area (and growing up in California), our expectations were high ... and we've been disappointed from the get-go. After having Dragon Palace recommended by so many, we tried it tonight. Man oh man ... this was not good.
We tend to try basics to see if those are done well, so we ordered the General Tso's Chicken. It was inedible. (The manager graciously agreed to take it off the bill.) It had some ingredient in the sauce which tasted awful and, frankly, made both of us ill. The fried dumplings were huge, doughy, pasty, and, while not inedible, were less-than mediocre. The fried "chips" put on the table when we sat down were oily (and tasted like the oil was old), and the sauce that came with them was sweet in a thoroughly unpleasant way. My Singapore Mei Fun was fine as was the Pork Lo Mein, though neither are a reason for us to return.
This restaurant clearly has its followers who enjoy dining there (the crowd picked up as we were leaving), but I'm afraid we won't be back. It simply was not a good experience for either one of us.
