Fresh Cup Cafe — Restaurant in Westerly

I don’t normally write reviews, but after reading Jennifer’s from a week ago, we felt we should share our own horrible experience. My daughter called in our sandwich order and was asked, ‘Are you going to get here by noon?’. Reply: ‘Yes’. We arrived at 1145am to a locked door. We patiently waited for about 2 minutes before a girl came to the door. She greeted us with ‘did you order take-out?’. I said ‘Yup, I thought you closed at noon’. As I was walking in she stated ‘It is noon’ and pointed towards the clock. Fairly surprised by the lack of professionalism, I said ‘No, it’s not…..it’s 11:47’. She said, ‘I think I know how to tell time’. By this point I was at the counter where 2 women were making sandwiches and I said ‘I do too, and I know it’s not noon’. One of the women making sandwiches said to the girl - ‘Did she just say something again?’ I was in disbelief that not only was the girl demeaning to a customer, but now the other employees were ganging up on a customer. Rather than let them act as bullies, I answered her question that was meant to belittle me. The woman’s reply was that ‘It wasn’t a big deal what time it was and they were very busy making to-go orders’. As I was walking out, the same woman stated loudly that ‘There are wars all over the world and she (meaning me) has to nit-pick about the time’. It was absolutely insane - I wanted to run out of there. Gas-lit by a trio of bullies as soon as we entered the establishment. We have been going to Fresh Cup since it opened and had talked to the original owner many times - she was sweet and pleasant. Terrible customer service! This place looked cute from the sidewalk but my friend and I were beyond upset by the staff's behavior. After receiving our food, I asked the counter person about our drinks. She pointed at the counter and said "right here." But I didn't see anything and said so. And she impatiently said "we're making it right now." That was not remotely clear in her previous comment, and we couldn't see behind the counter what they were doing. So I turned to my friend and rolled my eyes privately, not intending to say anything publicly. Another staff member, who seemed to be in charge, was wiping tables nearby and saw me make a face and asked if there was a problem. When I tried to tell her what happened, she got huffy and aggressive. (Why did she ask if there was a problem if she wasn't going to listen?) Then she stalked back to the counter and told the other staff to ignore us. Not surprisingly I got upset and raise my own voice. I went up to the counter trying to explain myself. And a third staff member suggested I walk myself right out the door. The manager escalated the situation unnecessarily, and she seems to have taught this approach to her staff. I felt like a criminal, not a paying customer. At least she gave me a refund when I asked for it. But I was upset and shaking after the encounter. The Turkey Mozzarella Melt was perfectly savory and gooey—a deeply satisfying sandwich that is now my daughter's new favorite thing. My personal highlight was the Chicken Salad Sandwich, which I ordered on their gluten-free bread. It’s genuinely some of the best gluten-free bread I’ve ever tasted, proof that they take quality seriously across the board when gluten free can be hit or miss. We also enjoyed a classic Everything Bagel with cream cheese, which was fresh and perfectly toasted. What truly sets this cafe apart is the heart behind it. The owner's incredible commitment to the community and her customers shines through in every interaction. That dedication translates directly into the amazing atmosphere and exceptional service. It’s these thoughtful touches that turn a simple lunch outing into a truly special experience.
