When I was a little boy I was introduced to sushi by people who caught a lot of the food that they made. They shared a small bit of their education with me along with their practical jokes (especially with octopus) and passion for the food that they served. So I'll start off by saying that I'm spoiled by knowing the difference between what came in on a plane and what was caught an hour ago. In addition I was in the business for a couple of decades. Blue Sushi has a surplus of passion on each plate. It is not a sushi bar. It is themed bar, not what brought me there so I won't say much about it other than it has a fun atmosphere. TVs were not necessary but they're there if needed. There's a chef in the back somewhere that wants to share not just sushi but food and smiles and happy tummies. Getting a 6 year old to finally find an appreciation for grilled Brussels sprouts is easily done here. A teen with a desire to explore sushi is now locked into this place and I may not be able to break her free of the style against sashimi or traditional because of the flavors she ran into here. Every dish in front of me was very well thought out all the way down to presentation and value. Love of food on every plate. Criticisms, TVs, if you're here for this you missed the point. Service, I expected worse for the theme concept but found it better because someone there is passing on their love and everyone there was getting it. I sensed a little seafood apprehension from our server but she was easily describing her emotions relating to her favorite items on the menu. I saw zero servers loitering. Tables turned a little slower than expected but the service was focused on the kitchen. It wasn't wrong. Also, the menu is "extended." It wasn't necessary and the type face of the descriptions is too small. Was well priced though. I think Blue Sushi has a long life ahead with leaving its love intact. Don't take those people away. I even think it's possible to use this restaurant as a gentle way to introduce people to sushi or change opinions about it and that's a feat. My 75 year old mom is not a fan but I bet I could change that opinion here. All in all, amazing food here. Saying everything is good is probably...
Read moreMy family and I have loved Blue Sushi Sake for years. We always bring our friends here when we go on double dates. We come here when family or friends visit from out of town. We must’ve eaten at this restaurant several dozen times in the past two and a half years. We love the food so much that we even stayed loyal and gave them another chance when they fell out of good standing with the Health Department after an inspection a little over a year ago. With all of that being said, I have to take a moment to express my extreme disappointment over the way Blue Sushi has gone downhill in the last 6 months. We’ve had THREE occasions where we’re dining for dinner with friends/family and it takes over an hour and a half to get our food. I will say that they offer free appetizers while we wait every time this happens, but to have that awful of an experience more than once is just unacceptable. It feels as though they’ve decided that they’ll just be an hour and a half behind on weekends and that there’s no need to actually fix the issue. The manager is incredible and is always very apologetic, but as I said, it’s really not okay to wait over an hour and a half to get your food on a regular basis. The last time we dined there, we went and told our waiter that we wanted the bill for our drinks because it had been almost two hours since we ordered and we wanted to leave. We waited 15 more minutes for him to bring our bill and he instead showed up with our food with absolutely no mention of the fact that we stated that we wanted to leave. My final gripe with Blue Sushi is that they recently decided to raise their prices a considerable amount. I love the sushi here, but in no way do I think I should be paying $17 for their rolls. I’m so let down because this is truly one of my favorite restaurants in the KC metro. I would’ve been willing to deal with the issue of waiting a long time if it weren’t for the fact that they’ve also raised...
Read moreThe first time I came here it was great, but the quality has been diminishing greatly since then. My last trip here was just flat out bad. The one before my last they got my order wrong twice and forgot one of the items I ordered, but I didn’t mention that since they didn’t charge me for the missing item it and I was too tired to argue, plus the server was very nice. But this visit was the last straw for me. After the usual 30 min wait time to be seated we ordered, and then waited a full hour for our food (I timed it, we ordered at around 7:10PM and didn’t receive our food until 8:20). An entire family that was seated after us got their food before we did, all the while we’re sitting there very hungry and wondering why it was taking so long but received no actual explanation. When we finally got our rolls they were very small and hardly felt worth the wait or the expense - I eat a LOT of sushi and have encountered rolls of all shapes and sizes, and these were definitely very small and lacking in rice. The waiter also acted very distant and inattentive. They asked if we would like to order an appetizer while we waited but I declined. Other than that they were completely silent in refilling our waters and taking our plates, no apology for the long wait, no explanation (not even a fake one for the sake of politeness), and they didn’t ask how the meal was or if we needed anything else. Once we finished they asked, verbatim, “Should I just bring you the check?” They may have been nervous that we were mad at them (we were mad, but not at them), but this just felt very rude and dismissive. At the end of it I tipped $10, which felt too generous in hindsight but I always try to be a good tipper since I know how hard serving can be. All in all I can honestly say I’ve had good experiences here in the past, but this last visit has spoiled my opinion of...
