Stopped in for lunch on a rainy Saturday about half an hour after they opened. It was still pretty empty at that time. The restaurant is modern-looking and spacious. They gave us this cozy little nook that was also able to accommodate our stroller.
They started us off with some hot (peach?) tea, which was nice on a rainy day. They don't have a drink menu as they are BYOB, but even a non-alcoholic drink menu would have been nice. They said they just have cans of soda, so there is some untapped potential for them here if they added some Asian drinks. They have some deals on the menu, like appetizer combos (we opted for the any two appetizers for $38), and lunch special - even on the weekends! We ordered a feast to share since we were celebrating Hubby’s birthday. We had:
-Scallop Foie Gras (scallop, Foie Gras, torched with truffle oil) - this was good but the scallop slices were thinner than I expected. Comes with six pieces -Beef Carpaccio (thin sliced beef, pecan, arugula, grana padano cheese, sauce, and balsamic) - a little too saucy for me and I wish they cut up the beef into smaller pieces because I nearly choked on one. Other than that, the beef itself was good -Salmon Course Lunch Special (2 salmon, 2 torched salmon, 2 salmon belly, 2 salmon tataki, 1 salmon handroll) - the salmon was very good. My only complaint would be th torched salmon - they put entirely way too much spicy mayo and eel sauce on it. Next time, I would ask for sauce on the side. This was a great deal though. It also comes with a soup, salad, and two bulgogi arancinis, which were very unique - but again too much sauce since it was served on a plate with tomato sauce. The salad already has dressing on it, which you guessed it - too much dressing. So this seems to be a common theme at Bon -20 PCs of chef's choice sushi - the pieces were not explained to us but we were able to guess the fish and the flavors of the ingredients for the most part. My favorite was definitely the tuna, which melts in your mouth. Other top contenders include a yellowtail and a fluke (which I normally don't love but it tasted really fresh here). Dislikes includes the filler pieces of eel and cooked shrimp. There were 10 different pieces, so we both got to have one of each -Croffle with ice cream - all of the reviews online showed everyone getting this dessert, so we wanted to try it since we figured it must be good. It was just okay - pretty basic and probably something you could just make yourself at home
Our waiter was really nice but we did feel neglected a bit. He forgot some things so we had to ask a few times for certain items. But it was probably because the restaurant was starting to get busier and he was the only waiter around. I would still come back. The fish is good quality and very reasonably priced for a higher end sushi place.
Tip - they might have a parking lot around back but there was some street parking at this time and it's only 25 cents...
Read moreDONT COME HERE. It was a strange & very disappointing experience. I came here with my boyfriend for our 3 year anniversary yesterday, recommended by a friend with good taste. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.
When we got there, no one was at the front and it took 5 min just for someone to show up, and we had a reservation. Once we were seated, the waitress came over 30 minutes later. Once she took our order, our sushi rolls came fast, but the appetizer never came & the nigiri showed up after we literally had to tell the owner we still wanted it an hour later ... the owner literally said "oh you never got your appetizer or your nigiri, do you still want it?" Like yes we still want it we had 3 rolls between the two of us.
After an hour and a half, the appetizer still never came. I didn't want to be rude but I also don't feel like I should have to beg for food we ordered and reminded the owner about twice. They even gave us our check in the end with the appetizer still on it and we had to send the check back. They were also out of the dessert we wanted after he told my boyfriend they had it.
The wait staff were rude, disorganized, and nonexistent. A sushi chef literally came over and laid down on the booth next to us while we were eating, let out a huge sigh, and started playing blackjack on his phone - while we were STILL waiting for the appetizer.
The tables decor and scenery were lacking and everything seemed old and damaged. The bathroom floor was dirty. Like the whole thing was a mess & disappointing.
The sushi was fine - i had a stomach ache all night and bathroom problems today. So ... never going back is an understatement.
I can't believe so many people rave about this restaurant - for the amount of time it took to drive there, not be fed, then drive home: we'd be better off going to our fave places in the city.
Update: the owners responded with sarcasm and a lack of owning up to their mistakes which definitely reflects the attitude that night. Im also disgusted that you blame my "frustration" for not having a good experience. The table next to me was literally fighting with you. Our waiter disappeared after taking our order well after we arrived. The owner was literally fighting with staff and customers AND YES the sushi chef did lay down on a bench next to our table and sigh then proceed to gamble on his phone. Ignoring the issues and stressing out your staff are not going to get anywhere. I rarely leave bad reviews and this one was very needed. Like i said, there are many restaurants with amazing service and food - this is NOT one of them. And no i would not be open to talking to you about "valid" concerns - as these are all valid and you're dismissing them. You may have been open for a year and a half but i dont see that going on much longer if you keep treating customers the way you did when...
Read moreMy family of 4 reserved an omakase experience at Bon for Father’s Day. Knowing that each person would cost $125, plus two $25 “special bowls” consisting of toro and uni, our expectations were high—not to mention the reviews on this restaurant’s Google page were promising. Unfortunately, we left the meal extremely unsatisfied. First, we were seated at a table with PAPER napkins and wooden chopsticks, and were baffled to find out that it was BYOB. For the luxury, “fine-dining” experience we were no doubt paying for, this setup that we were immediately met with was shocking. We are then served flavorless and watered down hot tea, followed by the “first course” which turned out to actually be the second course since our waiter brought it out in the incorrect order. The waiter, though definitely polite, delivered vague descriptions of the courses that left us still confused as to what we were actually eating. Thankfully, the saving grace of our meal earning Bon 2 stars in this review was the quality of the fish. The sashimi itself was fresh and buttery—especially the tuna. Sadly this aspect is the only positive note that I have of our experience. The “special bowls” that we were looking forward to turned out to be drastically underwhelming. The toro was flavorless, uni was stale, and seaweed also completely flavorless. Like literally, the seaweed tasted like cardboard. We would hardly pay $10 for that, much less $25. The 10 piece nigiri set was additionally nothing special. This may be personal preference, but all 4 of us found that the majority of these 10 pieces were just not good, sometimes borderline inedible. Throughout this distressing experience, we also were not getting consistent refills of water, waiting almost 20 minutes with empty glasses before having to ask the waiter to come by, and our table lamp broke down and stopped working. And our last dish—dessert—was frankly diabolical. Not only did we wait for almost half an hour for it, but it turned out to be a COLD “croissant waffle” with a scoop of plain vanilla ice cream on top. The croffle was evidently not fresh. It was so stale we could barely cut through it. It was not elegant or impressive. The final takeaway is that for $550 dollars total (not including a 4% credit card surcharge on the bill and tip), this overall omakase experience—the food, the atmosphere, and the service—was BEYOND subpar; we found maybe 10% of the meal to be...
