For a couple of years now, The Charles has been our go-to special occasion place, and we were so excited to finally go back last night to celebrate something significant. Every other time we've dined there, the experience has been totally top-notch in every way, which is why we were so disappointed with just how different things were this time around. From the moment we sat down, everything was just... underwhelming and chaotic. Our server came to the table, greeted us, and immediately told us they were out of bread. We were surprised by this, given that we were there on a Friday night, so the restaurant should've anticipated being busy. There were also tables nearby with a full basket of un-touched bread, which only added to our disappointment. We asked whether they'd be able to comp a side dish for us as a consolation, and the server informed us that the manager refused. They did manage to scrounge up a couple of small pieces of baguette for us, but it's clear they were not prepared that evening. We ordered our cocktails and appetizers, and the appetizers wound up coming out before we even had our drinks, which was not ideal. Now - let me preface this by saying I am someone who NEVER sends things back at restaurants. But when my cocktail arrived, it was so sour, I couldn't drink it, so I sent it back and ordered a glass of wine, which wound up being lovely, so at least that was a bonus. For our entrees, I ordered the salmon and my partner had the skate. The food was good, but not great, and honestly, it was just all very standard. We could've gotten the same meal at about 100 other local restaurants at a much lower price point. The menu was also a summer menu, which was odd, given that we're into October now. Service was very slow throughout the meal, though to be fair, it did appear as though our server was in the weeds most of the night, leading us to wonder if they were short-staffed. We also saw the manager coming around to greet guests at other tables, but he passed us over and never asked how our evening was going, which was another disappointment. Those little things make a difference. The whole night was just so underwhelming, and it put a damper on what we were celebrating. I'm sincerely hoping that they were having an off night, but based on some other recent Google reviews, I'm worried that this is a case of the level of service and quality of the food declining because The Charles has a reputation now for being one of the "it" places in the greater Hartford area, so they don't have to try as hard to get people in the door. The whole reason we loved this restaurant so much is because the service and food always knocked our socks off, so it's truly a shame if they aren't putting the same level of effort in anymore. I'm not saying we'd never go back there, as I'd love to give it another shot, but we definitely won't go for any sort of special occasion because we don't want to be let down again. I would say to the owners -- you have such a fabulous spot here, and when you first opened, you created such a magical, unique, and memorable experience for your guests. I used to rave about it and recommended it to everyone I knew. Though your popularity has grown, don't forget the special attention to detail you initially provided, as that's what had me shouting from the rooftops how wonderful The Charles was! With any hope, I'll be able to do that...

Read moreI feel bad leaving a negative review, but the more I think about my experience the more I think I need to say something. Also, I recognize we are privileged to go out to dinner and there are many important issues people are facing, but I still believe treating people with respect is very important. After dining at The Charles a few times over the summer/fall, I raved about how great it was there. We especially loved it because of the plentiful outdoor seating, and fantastic kids menu, and that is why I recommended to family that we go on a Friday night for dinner. Since there's 11 of us, which includes 3 children and 3 senior citizens (2 of them with walkers), we made it a point to arrive on the early side to get a table (they don't take reservations for outdoor seating). We arrived at 4:45PM, asked to be seated and were told that they were only accommodating their previously made reservations that night (no walk ins). My husband came outside to tell me this, and then asked him to ask them when they changed their outdoor seating to reservation only. (In the meantime I went back to their website, which still said outdoor is first come first served.) He was told that they weren't really sure and couldn't give him a straight answer. Because of our circumstances (party of 11, Friday night at around 5) I knew that it was going to be nearly impossible to get in anywhere else, so I asked to speak with the manager (which I never do). I asked him when they started accepting reservations outside and he said they don't, but that they were not accepting walk-in's that night. After asking why, he finally told me that they were short staffed in the kitchen. Here's why I am irritated: I completely understand the staffing shortages going on right now. No one can be blamed for that. BUT - The Charles has an active online presence. Why couldn’t they post something during the day so customers like us would know in advance they wouldn't be able to accommodate walk ins that night and to make other arrangements? Why did our 2 elderly (with walkers) people have to be inconvenienced? Lastly, to make matters worse, not even one hour after I had this experience, The Charles posted (on Facebook) about making sure to come to sit on their outside patio to enjoy the fall before it ends? That seemed especially...
