Would like to give this place a higher review but... We came looking for a mead so we could get an idea of how maybe our own home-brewed mead might taste, and also wanted a sweet red wine to compare to one we had brewed ourselves. The clerk asked us if we were looking for sweet or dry, we told her sweet, and she encouraged us to try this red wine on display at the front of the store; reassuring us that nobody ever complained about the wine. It was very dry and bitter, probably THE WORST red wine Iâve ever tasted. She clearly used basic sales tactics to push us to buy a poorly selling red wine they wanted rid of. If we were there for a dry wine, I would show mercy here. They were friendly, and stayed open a few extra minutes to let us make our selections, but I am not pleased with how a very poor wine was dumped on us because she wanted to make a sale on it. Would go again, but I wonât take their wine recommendations next time.
Edit: After your response I did a little more looking into this wine and some note it as âsweetâ due to it being an off-dry wine and having residual sugars, however I would be careful when recommending that as a sweet wine as compared to dry, because off-dry is still not necessarily sweet. However due to a valid response and many noting it as sweet still, Iâll cut you some slack and up this rating slightly. Apologies for the...
Read moreWheeling is one of the most subtly beautiful places. I was born here and love returning to spend time with family. Wine is also a passion of mine. Good Mansion Wines combines the two in perfect fashion. The shop itself is a treasure. I don't think I have ever bought wine in a prettier place. This of course makes the browsing and ambience incredible. The selection is terrific - real care and intentional curation were taken in the varieties you'll find here. Echézeaux Gand Cru next to CÎtes du RhÎnes (my most recent visit had me purchasing a great bottle of Chateau de Saint Cosme "Les Deux Albion" which was great (and a great value)), a great selection of Barolos and other treasures of Piemonte, and Italy in general, and just a tremendous and well-selected variety. I could peruse and hang out here for a very long time. I like how they have their wine organized, separating Old World from New, but since the old house is so wonderful to wander through you get to experience different and wonderful rooms full of shelves of some great wine. I truly think this place a real treasure. When you are in this wonderful city, make sure Good Mansion Wines is one...
Read moreWill not be returning to this location due to being treated very poorly by the owner. I understand my not even two year old probably shouldn't have been standing on the table, but Iâm so used used to him doing weird stuff I didnât even notice. Until the owner flashed a fake smile back at me and shortly stormed over with a sopping wet rag, slapped it on the table directly where my toddler was standing (was, I removed him promptly after the fake smile with fiery eyes). He aggressively cleaned the table and was standing so close to me I actually felt like my personal space was very invaded. He swiped me with the rag in his aggravated attempt to prove to me how sickening it was that a literal baby was standing on his table. Oh! And letâs not forget the first time I ever came here and was assured that there was no eggs in the croissants, second time my friend double checked and there was definitely eggs in them! Guess I ate eggs! ( I abstain for religious purposes) so that was fantastic! Still gave this place a chance even after that non sense. Needless to say, I can make my own baguettes....
