Several of my friends recommended this place. I got together with my best friend to try it out. I have only been here once, so I acknowledge that it may have just been a bad day or to late in the day, but I found them just average. We came in the evening as they were cleaning up from the dinner rush. We were the only customers there. The burrito was very greasy and kind of bland. Everyone had said thier tacos were the bomb so I ordered a CARNITAS taco, hold the cilantro, to go with it. They gave me a pretty decent looking CARNE ASADA taco covered with ALOT of cilantro. When I told another lady that I had the wrong taco she said she would make me another one, but couldn't make it without cilantro because it was already mixed with the onions. The new taco had less than half the meat on it and was pretty dry. I found the condiment cart (which had onions WITHOUT cilantro), added extra hot sauce, carrots and jalapenos to the burrito and taco. I also picked off about 70% of the cilantro. That made them taste pretty decent. Since they didn't take the wrong taco away, I picked most of the cilantro off and dressed it up as well. I will see how it tastes for lunch tomorrow. I always like to taste my food before adding seasonings to it. I've always said sauce should enhance flavor, not provide it. If your food needs it to be edible, its not cooked right. That being said the extra hot was very good and after adding it, jalapenos and carrots, the food was fine. I don't expect I will drive across town just to eat there again, but if a group of friends wants to go in the future, I would...
Read moreMuch like Abelardo's, Tacos Lopez deals in the good kind of fourthmeal, cheap and real Mexican eats, complete with a 24-hour drive thru. You're not missing much by choosing to grab and go - not much work has been put into the interior, giving it that run-down charm you look for in a good Mexican restaurant. There's a salsa bar, too, though napkins are kept behind the counter, so I'd like to apologize to the lady working the register as she undoubtedly had to wipe up my sloppy dishing of salsa into those little cups.
At $2 a pop, I thought the tacos were a little expensive, until I saw the six-inch tortillas used to contain the large quantity of each of my preferred meats. Four tacos was definitely a bit too much, but as I plowed through the adovada, barbacoa, asada, and carnitas, I didn't mind. No real standouts, though the carnitas had been sitting around for a while, as it was quite dry. One of the hazards of a 24-hour operation, I guess.
With La Peyna 2 right across the street, it's hard to justify Tacos Lopez during normal operating hours, but if you need 3 AM Mexican they more than...
Read moreTacos Lopez has good, affordable, authentic Mexican food, and is open late. I exclusively order through the drive-thru, and it is an inconsistent experience. When the order is accurate, there's an argument for Tacos Lopez being the best quick Mexican restaurant in Wichita. Unfortunately, accuracy -at least through the drive-thru- is spotty, at best. The issue is that they do not repeat your order at all, and you are only provided the price once at the pickup window, so it's a bit of a gamble whether the order you placed and the order you're given will match. Extras or alterations are an even bigger roll of the dice; my usual order is a carne asada quesadilla with sour cream, and I'd estimate that only about 25% of the time, I actually get sour cream.
The food itself is always very good, and it's cheap enough that the mistakes aren't a deal-breaker. It is frustrating, though. I'm giving it a 3.5 here as an average between when it's right and when it isn't. If accuracy wasn't an issue, it'd be an...
