I have always loved Colonial Williamsburg since I was a child growing up in Virginia Beach and taking a school field trip there. This was my first time back in years. It is both just as I remember it and greatly improved with interpreters and events representing the history and culture of 18th-century Indigenous and enslaved peoples.

I also learned about a prominent Jewish family of silversmiths and entrepreneurs who had businesses up and down the Eastern Seaboard, from New York to Norfolk, Virginia: The Myers family. I had absolutely fascinating discussions about them, the 18th-century economy, the blacksmith trade, and clothing at the tailor's shop, the blacksmith's shop, and the silversmith's shop. Colonial Williamsburg is one of the best things Hampton Roads/the Tidewater area has to offer and I speak as a native local of the area....

8 years ago this was one of our most recommended places in the country. It had the most historical interpreters in the country. It has a monstrous endowment so it could hire the best of the best and we loved it. We saw the best shows.

We went back for the Lafayette Celebration and were completely disappointed. Every story was about how racist the country was. Nothing about the incredible accomplishment of the founders of our nation. Very few reasons to buy a ticket over just walking through the village. We talked to a board member and when we ask him some questions he literally said, “Uhm, there is George Washington.” Then ran away.

We talked to other employees and they had terrible stories of how the non-profit fired a lot of good people over the last couple years. It was so disappointing! The story of Williamsburg is not racism...
