Update, 5/21/23: I'll say right off the bat that I understand the pandemic changed menu prices, I'm not oblivious or unsympathetic to that. That said, $30+ for three slices, mozz sticks, and a couple of sodas is a little steep. Finding out I was charged $1 for a side of ranch dressing that ran me .25 maybe a year ago also didn't sit well with me. Burke Street, please reconsider some of your price hikes - don't nickel and dime loyal customers that have been coming to you for years! Burke street has been a go-to for this imported Jersey girl since I moved to Winston almost ten years ago. The pizza deserves the phone book's worth of awards lining their walls. The 90s hits playing definitely blanket the place in nostalgic comfort for yours truly, too. For the uninitiated, the slices are the big, floppy "New York" style and about 1.5 to 2x the size of a "normal" pizza slice elsewhere. Also, the ranch dressing (get it to dip crusts in, trust me) is better than any pizza joint's has a right to be. (update: a side of ranch now costs $1 for a dipping cup!) Expect to spend ~$8-10+ (update: EACH).

The Burke Street Pizza Experience (Pickup Edition). I had a taste for pizza this week while at work, and Burke Street was conveniently near. I called in my order for their pepperoni pizza, side salad, and soda lunch special. Whoever took my order was pleasant, and upon arrival, my food was ready. I saw some positives, such as a clean restaurant and staff in gloves. Now, this is where things get tricky. My pizza was inside a bag, and my salad was in another bag. I had a cup for my drink but only two hands. I asked the cashier to provide me one bag to put my pizza and salad in. Once ready to eat, I saw that my pizza was on a paper plate inside of a bag. For some, this may not be a problem, but the packaging of food is essential to me. The carryout presentation of food lets me know a place cares about the food from the start till completion and till ate by the consumer. Although the food was good, I kept thinking about the presentation of my food. If Burke Street Pizza continues to present its food this way for carryout, I am unsure I will return.

Well I've been here twice and both times the pizza was gross. I eat a lot of pizza, I am from NY, and was excited the first time I came here, only to be disappointed by the hard and overcooked crust. Everything was just blah. Well I figured I would come back and try the Sicilian style to give this place a second chance, and man it was even worse. I love Sicilian, but this is not Sicilian. This was oversized, elementary school cafeteria, gross pizza. There wasn't even sauce and cheese on all of the outside pieces, and it was like 2 inches thick. I felt like I was eating a loaf of bread with a little sauce and generic mozzarella. I think I've figured it out though, this pizza does not have fresh ingredients. The dough is pre made/frozen, and It's tough, it burns easily, it's gross. The sauce is bland pizza sauce, not good pizza marinara. I just can't do this ever again. If you have high standards for pizza, avoid this place. I'd rather eat cicis than this garbage. There are better choices out there, and I will not return here.

I have been dining at this restaurant for about a year with a family member and we dine in during lunch every week. Most recently we came to the restaurant and approached the counter waiting to be serviced. The owner who usually wears the glasses and ball cap and the young woman who usually tends to the cash register were both looking at a phone together. They did not acknowledge us to take our order. When mentioned, another employee attempted to also make a remark, yet we were still not serviced. Another customer came in shortly after us and an employee assisted them at the register, however, our order still had not been taken yet neither were we acknowledged. This was on a week day during my lunch hour which was verbally expressed, yet the owner and young lady did not make an effort to assist us for about 5 to 10 minutes. The store was not busy and there was no one in line when we first entered in.

This was not the first time receiving poor service from this location. Over time the pizza that we have ordered has not always been fresh and would be seen stored under the counter then reheated which is very unsanitary. The drink machine has always had beverages that tasted as if they had not been replaced in a while. The dining and bathroom areas are unkept as well. This has been a terrible dining experience overall. It shows that this business does not value their customers. This is food service, service being a main factor. It matters how you treat paying customers especially those who have been seen bringing their business to your establishment consistently. The way we were mistreated and disregarded during our last visit was very disgusting and intolerable. I highly do NOT recommend dining at this restaurant or affiliates and I will not...

Update: Owner lied and said I was with a former employee (like that make the disrespect ok). I didn’t. Nor did I beg for wings, I ordered two slices and paid in cash to make it easy as possible on your employees. In reality I came in with my girlfriend who’s from out of state and has never even ate or seen this shop. Which by the way is the reason why I left my review because of how uncomfortable they made her feel. Play the cameras back one more time and hear in when your middle aged Caucasian employee yelled out how he wants to go home. Then watch out for the part where I had to walk around the huge puddle of mop water at the entrance. (With no wet floor sign out) That was me. You were in the shop at the time and didn’t care. But now that I spoke up on the internet it’s important? PIZZA WAS MID. Employees are rude. Do be fooled by these generous reviews, beware that if you try to support this pizza shop after 8 (2 hours before closing) you will experience the worst service. Doesn’t matter if you make it easy on the employees by simply ordering two slices of pizza that they just have to heat up, they will be highly disrespectful regardless. Examples: side eyeing you at the cashier like you aren’t even there, THROWING buckets of water to mop the entrance while 3 other customers are still in the shop, throwing pizza pans out front where the customers are waiting for their orders, yelling how they want to go home loud enough for the customers to hear, and don’t even bother having manners here. All your thank yous will be ignored, it’s almost like the whole staff is going through...

Quaintly nestled on Burke Street, Burke Street Pizza is my favorite local pizza parlor, my go-to for a pizza splurge, and is most definitely one of Winston-Salem's hidden gems.

You won't find thick, overwhelming, bready crust here. Nope! Instead, you'll get something more akin to a New York style pie - thin, delightfully crunchy/crispy in spots, yet still chewy where it matters most. Their sauce is satisfyingly simple, and simply delicious. I could go on about toppings and such, but when it comes to pizza, it's all in the sauce and crust - it's safe to say that these folks have theirs figured out.

Other tidbits: -They sell both pizza by the slice and full pizzas -They've got some other menu items as well besides pizza -They serve Pepsi products -Seating is a tad bit limited -Parking is also a tad bit limited -They have a really neat bar that faces out the window (nice to sit, eat, and watch cars/people go by). -They have public restrooms -They cost more than Little Caesars (you get what you pay for - better taste in my opinion)

In short: Burke Street Pizza sure knows how to make "just one more slice" nearly...
