Let me start off by saying that I really don’t do many reviews so for me to do this, really just bothers me to no end. I’m pretty new to the area having recently moved here I wanted to support locally owned businesses and so I was excited to try Big Daddy’s BBQ. I go up to the drive through and for a person that has never tried the food there before the lady taking my order didn’t seem to care of making and keeping a new client as I asked her what is a favorite dish from this place. She just answered “ have a look at what you want and order”. I took the hint and ordered ribs, chicken and I tried their green beans and cabbage. It also came with cornbread. So they have you pull up to another window and I give my cell so they can call me when the food is ready. I kid you not I waited over 30 minutes for my food. It was not even busy you can’t go inside to eat sooo why so long?? I have no idea. I’m a very patient person so I thought to myself I don’t mind waiting if the food is fantastic. When I got my food I wish I would have checked right then and there but I didn’t. I drove down the street to Lake Connie not even a mile away to enjoy my food under the shady trees. When I opened my food there was no steam coming from it!!! Why!?!? Because the food was COLD!!! Yes COLD FOOD!!😡😡I don’t understand how you have a person wait over 30 min for bbq and it is cold, not warm but cold… the sides were warm. The only thing I liked about the side was the cabbage. That was the best tasting cabbage I ever had, it would have been more enjoyable if it were hot. I don’t think I will go back there again. Do to others as you would like to be treated. I would NEVER SERVE ANYONE COLD FOOD. How do they not know that the food going out is cold!?! At least put it in a microwave or something but never send out food that’s cold, I feel bad that my first experience from this place will be my only experience because I love bbq and supporting local businesses, but I will not spend my money here again to wait over 30 min...
Read moreOne of my Lyft passengers hyped this joint up when I brought up having previously gone to college for two years and having lived in Winter Haven for about one year and never stopped at the iconic bbq. I told myself for probably 3 years I would visit after class or after work and I just never did.
Unfortunately, it did not live up to the hype I had in mind or my passenger reignited the ambers of...
My cashier, JV, was friendly and informative of the menu, and my referrer, Mario, a cook at the joint, was proud to see me, as promised I would come by the weekend after I drove him. He had previously told me the oxtail on the menu was Caribbean style, so in my mind I had hints of allspice and island seasonings with a lighter brown sauce already dancing on my tongue's imagination. Yeah... It was a familiar Black American style, souped up with thick gravy. I ordered the bowl with yellow rice, which absolutely disappeared under the oxtail, so shout-out to portioning but I don't think I will order it again, at least not the bowl. It wasn't bad, but there's something about food that's just eh 🤷🏿♂️ that makes an experience wanting for more. Maybe the dinner with cabbage would be better, but the oxtail flavor itself just wasn't as described.
For my brother, I ordered the 1/2 slab dinner. This I enjoyed more of, but I think I'll have to go back and ask for a sauce other than sweet to really see what they're cookin with. It came with two sides — small bagged French fries and two wrapped muffins of corn bread were chosen. Nothing to write home about with either other than they were packaged well and I wish there had been more fries.
Overall, for the price, I think I would be able to get better flavors out at Pete's Famous BBQ in Pine Hills, but maybe that's a bias from family references, local loyalty, and repeat purchases there. I do think the waiting area is chill and hope to come by on a cool day to order something else off the menu and try their...
Read moreI take my yearly voyage to central Florida just before Christmas to spend the New Year at Disney and the adjoining areas of Florida. Sure beats the doldrums of winter in the Northeast. Well, back in 2011 while in Florida my friend turned me on to Big Daddys BBQ. I am reviewing the Winter Haven location.
There are quite a few locations that purvey this stuff, and let me tell you its that good. The location in Winter Haven seems to be in an up and coming area, its certainly not a prime location, but at the same time I wouldn't say its off the beaten path. The parking lot is rather small and you order on one side and drive around to the other to pick up your food. The ordering process is pretty straightforward and the menu is legible and easy to read and understand. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food.
I order the pulled pork sandwich and the ribs typically. The pulled pork is so good in fact that the first time I went to Big Daddys I nearly drove off the road trying to carefully devour the sandwich while driving. Its that good. The ribs are amazing, tender, soft but with a good bite. The meat is obviously well trimmed and perfectly seasoned. The ribs are accompanied with slices of white bread which help clean the pallet. If you are in Florida I definitely recommend Big Daddys. He can be...
