We visited Sol on Monday, July 21st around 6:30 PM while in town visiting family. We’ve been to this restaurant several times and usually have a great experience, but this time the service really missed the mark.
From the start, our server wasn’t very friendly. When he brought the waters, he said “pass them around the table” not in a polite way, but more like a demand. I didn’t hear him clearly at first, and when he repeated himself, it was noticeably more aggressive. A simple “can you please pass these down” would’ve gone a long way or even just setting them at the end of the table like most servers do. His tone just came off like he didn’t want to be there.
When it came time to order, my stepmother asked for the salad she always gets with two types of protein, something she’s done many times before without an issue. He said he wasn’t sure if that was allowed and would check. When he came back, he told her it wasn’t possible. Honestly, it didn’t seem like he even asked.
Then, when he brought the salad, he didn’t include the dressing. When my stepmom asked for it, he pointed to the salsa on the table that came with the chips, saying “Oh, you want more?” That salsa was clearly for the table, not her salad. Normally, they bring out a separate dressing just for that.
My water sat empty the whole meal while he kept asking my dad if he wanted another beer. Seemed like he was more focused on the alcohol tab than basic service.
Forgot the extra napkins my dad asked for,
Forgot my wife’s horchata, said he didn’t forget but he clearly did since it wasn’t coming out until we asked for it again.
Didn’t remember how many soups we ordered.
It wasn’t even a busy day SMH.
Then at the end, instead of just bringing the change, he asked if we wanted it back. That’s just not how it should be. Always assume the guest wants their change.
The food was still good and to be fair, the one nice thing he did was take a family photo for us when we asked. But overall, the service was disappointing. This server was no bueno. We’ve had much better experiences here but this guy brought the vibe para bajo. Hopefully we get a better server next time because I rather eat Taco Bell next time than to deal with...
Read moreThis is one of those places that defines "hole in the wall". It's a small restaurant and bar, one large screen TV (for the bar patrons), and family seating separate from the bar area. It's sandwiched between a Raleys grocery store, and a small town Sears store on the western edge of Woodland.
It's not particularly special in its outward appearance. You know the kinds of small town strip malls that are scattered throughout the US. And this place is just like any other. Chinese restaurant, laundromat, big grocery store, small chain stores, and a couple of other ethnic restaurants.
Seen one, seen them all.
Except for Sol Mexican. This restaurant has all the good points of a small restaurant and none of the bad. The food is very traditional California-Mexican, plentiful, quickly served, and really good. The children's menu is excellent as well. Even the obligatory "basket of tortilla chips" is outstanding! The chips are fresh, warm, and crunchy. Plus the chips are accompanied by an excellent salsa which is flavorful, fresh, and won't give your mouth a chemical burn!
The service is great, as is the atmosphere. They serve seafood as well as the more usual entrees. And it's all good. You can have it "mild", or you can go for the "well seasoned" ("clear your sinuses out" spicy).
Whatever you order will be excellent, enjoyable, and very reasonable. In fact it's one of our favorite local restaurants due to its excellent value, and consistently good food.
Try it with your family, you won't be disappointed... and your wallet will be happy too! Also they have a local mariachi group on Friday and Saturday evenings during the warmer parts of the...
Read moreMy first time. So it could be a fluke. I came in right behind a couple. We all sat at the bar. The place was full so I wasnt surprised the service was slow. 3 different folks came and went working the bar. No one spoke/greeted. In about 10 minutes I was able to order a beer. No menu. No chips. No order. I spoke with the folks next to me at length. And enjoyed my beer. They were able to speak spanish and obtained menus and ordered dinner. After about 20 minutes I asked to see a menu and the employee responded that she would get it momentarily. She made it clear there was an issue. I was takem aback as this was my only visit. My beer was nearly gone when some folks came in and asked me to move down a bit although it was already tight. The folks on the left got there dinner. The folks on the right got drinks and chips while I had no drink and no dinner ordered after 40 minutes. I left only to be confronted by a guest that was sitting to my left because I said I guess I don't speak the language. It was clear that I was treated unfairly and why. I get it. Being a minority stinks... Tonight t was me. Food I saw didnt look great and they bought my beer. Just hate to see us coming to this. Good...
