If your journeys to experience Americana, ever brings you to Woodstock Vermont try to make time for a light lunch at Mon Vert Cafe - a breakfast/sandwich/coffee house nestled in the scenic and interesting place they call Woodstock. Contrary to intuitive zoning practices Woodstock let a number of merchants and other business persons set up shop in old homes that once dotted Central St. Mon Vert Cafe is just that, a trendy sandwich shop coffee house placed inside an old home. It's a mostly welcoming place with prints of artwork for sell hanging along the walls, seating is "first come first serve" I guess the kind of place where you have to assertively grab a chair. The staff isn't going to help. And the patrons wont really offer up any help finding a table either in fact when we were there we saw a sewing circle of ladies taking up a table and they were not eating. Guess what they were doing? They were sewing or knitting I think. So its not one of those sit down restaurants wherein after you are through dining you get up and go, nope at this place you enjoy your stay and avoid eye contact with new customers who need your seat. The sewing circle was not the only patrons I observed doing this. I saw two other young ladies reading a book at a seat that I deemed was meant for dining. And these things happened during the lunch hour rush. For me it was an experience of territorial confusion - where should I go? Alternative living seemed to highlight the spirit of this restaurant, I'm not being judgey, the coffee bar actually had a drink called the "Q...R Coffee" or something along those lines. I didnt see just "Straight Coffee" being offered as a tolerant alternative but that's ok I guess - I don't drink coffee anyway. There's nothing worse than a good cup of coffee. Still straight coffee makes sense. This place serves breakfast but we both got sandwiches to our own individual tastes. It's those kind of sandwiches with the hard bread, ya know the bread that almost seems to have a shell casing around it - like what the French introduced to American Doughboys in The Great War. In fact I think that's where we also got the idea for coffee shops, from the French during WWI. Now the employees were very courteous and boy were they busy! They didn't offer much info about the place, I had to be my usual gruff self and ask questions - you know like "Where does the line begin, Do we sit down first, So we wait here for our coffee, Will someone bring us our food, Do we have to go upstairs to dine, I have a bad knee from Operation Iraqi Freedom?" It turned out, Yes we had to go upstairs to eat because that Sewing Circle of ladies who wouldn't make eye contact with me weren't budging. Interesting observation...the restroom has a wonderful view of Kedron Brook a fast running little tributary to the Ottauquechee River. I'm not playing, they really did have a coffee named after an alternative lifestyle - Google can censor me if they are so inclined but its true. My wife ordered it. Thats got me...
Read moreToday was my first drop-in at this spot, and I've gotta say, it feels like a piece of Parkslope, Brooklyn, NY tucked away in Woodstock, VT. As a Born & Raised New Yorker turned Upper Valley local, finding a place that's not just your average Joe (pun intended) has been a bit of a mission. But this cafe? Its so cozy with the vibes of those trendy, cute spots in the city and I'm here for it!
It's family-friendly !! —spotted the cutest kid playing ambassador to everyone walking in. The setup is sweet, with seats upstairs and downstairs, all under the watchful eyes of some cool art pieces and greenery. Plus, a mini library for those who like their coffee with a side of literature. And the bathroom? Spotless and stocked like it's ready for the apocalypse—TP, PT, and disinfectant in abundance!
The tunes here hit just the right note, a mixtape of throwbacks and current bops -its literally music to everyone's ears, from millennials to baby boomers. The staff? Absolute gems, each rocking their own style and making the place buzz with good energy; they are kind, cute and polite ! The coffee hits the spot, the food is delicious (umm hello, organic and dietary-friendly options! Yes!! I’m here for itttt!!), and it's just the right scene for typing away on your laptop, hanging out w your little one or catching up w some friends.
So yeah, Mon Vert, you've won over the nyc girl with the ombre purple braids. I'm officially a regular, and I can't wait for my...
Read moreThis is a cozy cafe in the heart of Woodstock, VT. Clearly the word has gotten out about it, as it was incredibly busy when I visited on a Tuesday afternoon around 1p. When I arrived, the line was up the stairs entirely and there was a steady stream of people walking in and then deciding the line wasn't for them.
The drinks come pretty quick and were well priced and what you would expect! They only serve oat, almond, and soy milks which I appreciate. The system here is to pick up drinks at the bar and then if you're dining in, there's a tracker for them to bring your food to your table. It was a bit chilly, so we retired to the 2nd floor where it was still busy, but felt roomy enough and cozy.
The food was great! We got a variety of things. The Bagel with Lox and the California Sando were definitely the standouts. Everything is well seasoned and the flavors are balanced. My only complaint would be that the food is a little overpriced for the portion sizes but I think it's still worth it if you're in the area!
I docked a couple stars on the atmosphere because while it's a cute place, I think that the traffic has ruined a bit of the place's charm. All of the bathrooms had lines, and there was seating that would be GREAT, but it was overtaken by the long line that weaves through the front...
