This is a fine example of a good solid British Northern "Chippy" if ever you visit Yorkshire, England...you will get fishcakes and fish & chips exactly like this. I think any bad reviews here are from people raised on frozen french fries and not very good batter. My wife is from Sheffield and I lived there for a couple of years. She and I can both attest that Ye Olde is standard for Sheffield batter and the fries which in America I don't think I've ever had them exactly like this. England is the type of place where from town to town accents, words for things and cooking styles vary. Order a fishcake in London and you will get what is called a "rissole" in the northern city of Sheffield. Both made differently and both city's residents may turn their nose up at each other's recipes. I've been to Ye Olde numerous times and each time has been equally excellent. We live near New Bedford, MA and it takes at least an hour to Woonsocket so while there we enjoy fish & chips and stock up on par-boiled fishcakes. We freeze them and enjoy them another time with homemade fries. BTW we've just come home from a new-ish posh New Bedford eatery...absolutely reeking with presentation right out of a cooking show...right on the water... and had fish & chips. Eating that inspired me to get online and rave about Ye Olde...nothing I know of in the USA beats it. All the best places I ever had good f&c around NB are either closed or lost their luster long ago....the ordinary New England frozen fries and un-inspired batter. I just spent $49 at a place 2 miles from my house and I'm not going back. Please try Ye Olde...if you somehow don't like it well, you don't like Yorkshire style. And Ye Olde, if you are reading this...thanks for serving a generous portion of South Yorkshire. As long as you DON'T CHANGE, we'll be back again and again. We'll be the ones beaming...

Ye Olde has been a mainstay in Woonsocket for nearly 100 years! If you are visiting this tiny city with a lot of history, you just must stop here and experience New England Fish and Chips at its BEST.
"The batter recipe has been unchanged over the 90 plus years, along with the English style chips which are made on the premises. A recent change has enabled us to prepare all fried foods in a non-hydrogenated and low trans-fat oil." from their webpage.
It's true. In this age of change, tinkering and lower quality for a higher price, this is one restaurant that has not lowered it's standards over DECADES of great service.
Sadly, the fish batter is NOT GLUTEN FREE but their red chowder is. I was fortunate enough to spend 11 years, on and off, in Woonsocket before learning that I need a strict GF diet...and I can STILL remember how delish the fish is. I have been told that the chips have only gotten better over the years. Chowder and fishcakes are also offered but call ahead for fishcakes as they sell out!
I recently brought my boyfriend here (from CT) for the first time and he was loving it. The history, the food, the uniqueness of Ye Olde is an experience. Later on, I took him to visit Hachi and we walked around the square. Don't forget to visit the Museum of Work and Culture across the street!! Great spot for ROAD TRIPPERS and TRAVELERS because there is a lot to do here in...
Read moreYesterday I visited and ordered a fish and chip and 2 orders of chicken and chips with my younger cousins. A girl in glasses yells out two fish and chips and two chicken and chips several times before looking at me and saying my order is ready. I walked to the counter and politely told her that I had only ordered on fish and chip and 2 of the chicken and chips. The same girl looks at me and says well it looks like you have an extra. I asked her if I was charged for it as she told me no. I showed her my receipt which was over $48! The chicken meal is only $8.05 and the fish meal is $11.25. The girl rolls her eyes and said that that was the correct price for a fish and chip and two chicken and chips! I told her that it couldn’t be right and that I couldn’t afford to pay for the extra fish and chip. The girl again said the pricing is correct. While $11 dollars doesn’t seem a lot it is because it’s the money I need to have so I can buy a plane ticket to Georgia to see a family members graduation from basic and turn into an airborne army ranger. I would have not had a problem if the girl actually was respectful and if she fixed her mistake and refunded my money. I’ve been a loyal customer for many years now while there food is good their customer service...
