I had been coming to fat tomato for a long time, but sadly I won’t anymore. I grew up in the area and fat tomato was always a super convenient option with good food. Unfortunately the ownership recently changed in late 2023 and things have taken a jurassic turn for the worse. The original owners were genuinely so nice and prioritized the quality of the food as well as your experience as a customer. Sadly the same can’t be said about the new owners, I immediately noticed a dip in quality when I found out about the ownership change (once freshly breaded chicken now frozen, once fresh oven roasted turkey now just deli turkey meat) but I was willing to overlook it and give the new owners a chance. One day I called in a sandwich in a rush on my way to work and the man who took my order “alex” assured me my order would be ready within 12 minutes, I showed up almost 30 minutes later and when I asked for my order they hadn’t even started preparing it. Then when I asked for an explanation Alex simply said he didn’t have one. I then asked for a voucher/gift card since I had no time to wait and then the “new owner appeared” after much resistance he agreed to give me a voucher equal to the value of my order which I was fine with. However I then asked him for a explanation as to what was going on he acted extremely offended and told me my expectations were too high. it’s a little ridiculous to be told 12 minutes on the phone and 30 minutes later nothing had been prepped so explanation to what happened doesn’t seem like much to ask for. As if that wasn’t enough he then told me it was best I don’t comeback as my “expectations are too high”. As a long time customer this experience was sad, because fat tomato always stood for good convenient food and a warm atmosphere however as far as i’m concerned fat tomato died when the original owners sold it. I definitely won’t be giving fat tomato anymore chances after this experience and i’ve stopped recommending them to people. Support other amazing local businesses with genuinely good local food and people such as MOOSEBURGER, WILDWILLYS, STONEWALL KITCHEN CAFE, Ect. it’s unfortunate I have to write this review as a long time fan of fat tomato but after my experience with “alex” and the new owner fat tomato is not a good restaurant at all.

Read moreI've been debating posting this because I truly like supporting The Fat Tomato, we've been going for a while now, and their food is something both my partner and I enjoy. However, I don't think I will be supporting them in the future or at least I will not order within an hour of closing because this most recent visit I was met with plastic in my food. Thankfully it was a big enough piece for me to notice but unfortunately this soured my experience. The sandwich (beef gyro) has been a recent favorite and I was really looking forward to it, but when you bite down on something and it turns out to be a part of a plastic tag (like the ones you use to tie a bread bag), that made its way into the mix....that is a potentially dangerous situation. That said, their Greek salad was really good and the sandwich itself, apart from the plastic piece, was also good.
I did not call the restaurant because by the time we got home and began eating they had already closed for the evening. But I want ownership to know this: while I am not one to call and complain, this could have happened to a child or to someone else and it could have resulted in a much dire way. Thankfully I was able to pick out the piece and did not notice any other issues. I also understand that the restaurant industry is still impacted by the pandemic, that training new folks takes time and effort. But please, please be more mindful when preparing guest's food. I shouldn't have had to worry about accidentally ingesting any additional fragments of plastic. Moving forward I hope the new owners can return to the quality and care I have come to know and love from...
Read moreMy husband and I spent the day in York and stopped by on a whim to grab lunch at Fat Tomato Grill. We went in and we were greeted by Alex from behind the counter. It 's a small place but cozy inside with seating outside. The menu had so many options, hot and cold sandwiches, salads, burgers, fries, mozzarella sticks... They had a bunch of vegetarian choices and a kids menu as well. There were drinks in the fridge and small desserts at the counter as well. We couldn't decide on what to eat but customers waiting for their orders gave us what they thought were top choices... although it seemed like all were top choices. Even Alex was telling us what the top sellers were as well. We decided on the Chicken Gyro sandwich and Cobb Salad. It didn't take long for us to get it. Delicious!! Chicken Gyro was hot, flavorful and the Tzatziki dressing perfect! My salad was full of fresh romaine and spinach leaves, the bacon was crisp and the blue cheese was the perfect amount. There was perfect amount of chicken on the salad too. We got talking to more customers and kept asking their favorite lunch. Sounds like we need to try them all. As we left, the owner was walking out as well and we had a conversation that made us feel like we belonged. It had a hometown feel. They were friendly, funny, and the food was a perfect lunch! We will be back and when we need to feed family a good sandwich lunch, we...
