Hands down one of my favorite experiences in Da Nang. Found the shop on Google while searching for a Banh Mi on my last day and made the trip to Grandma Vuongs and was met with a nice lady, apparently the mother of the current shop owner and the daughter of the original shop owner, who passionately told me the history of their shop and how they came to set up in Da Nang.
The place is quiet and very classy. It felt very elegant eating here.
Now to the star of the show, the Banh Mi! While a bit pricey compared to others in the area, one bite and you'll quickly see why. Each component is fresh and vibrant. The bread was chewy with the right crust. The herbs not overpowering. The egg on top, a rich and decadent add on that enhances the dish. But the real star are the meats. The vietnamese charcuterie as they call it was all house made with classic recipes dating back from the original shop. The ham/loaves were great but the pate sealed the deal for me. I had to order one with extra Pate to take with me to the airport and ordered via grab too for my friends.
While there are many, many, many Banh Mi shops in the area, you should make it a point to stop by Grandma Vuongs. The meat really seals the deal
Ps. They have great drinks too. Had a salted coffee and a kombucha to pair with my...
Read moreThis place is by far the BEST banh mi restaurant in all of Da Nang. This is quite possibly the only banh mi place where the employees wear gloves on BOTH hands. The other banh mi places are filthy and they do not wear gloves. Grandmas banh mi ranges from 35k - 49k. Not only that, the inside of the business is super clean and immaculate. If you have lived in Vietnam for a long time, you would know that finding a clean and sanitary place is like winning the lottery.. This place is a gem.
For those people who complained about this place being “too expensive” well, if you want a banh mi for 20k, that banh mi will be covered in flies and the employee will use their dirty hands to make it for you.. and don’t forget, those banh mi food stalls are out in the sun and the food is rotting in the hot sun all day.. by all means, go pay 20k for that banh mi. You will be sitting on the toilet all day. Take it from me who has lived in Vietnam for a LONG time..
That being said, paying 35k-49k for a banh mi at grandma banh mi is well worth it, if you want a clean and sanitary banh mi. If you want a dirty 20k banh mi, then by all means, go to one of those run downed banh mi food stalls surrounded by flies and...
Read moreWe ordered two coffees and two sandwiches. My partner went for tofu (not on the menu) as they were down to one egg in the middle of the day. The tofu sandwich arrived soon enough as did our coffees. My sandwich was seemingly forgotten (despite us being the only customers). An elderly lady eventually brought me a sandwich which did not correspond to my order and was lacking any veggies, sauce etc. It was essentially just bread with a few cold cuts. Another lady (who was there during our order) came to check on me a bit later to ask what we had ordered. When I told her she just left.
Our coffees were advertised at 25K each but were billed at 37K each. The whole order (we did not find the prices for our sandwiches on the menu at all) came down to 154K with little explanation on the receipt of how we got to that sum (the items on it do not correspond to what we ordered except for the coffees). A surcharge for the holidays was mentioned but seemed to have been randomly added to our food items. I would not care for the higher and intransparent pricing if it was not for the terrible service and bad food.
I'd suggest avoiding this place and getting your bánh...
