I was on the hunt for a truly local, non-touristy seafood spot in Saigon, and Quan Oc Nhu delivered exactly what I was hoping for. I’m pretty sure I was the only tourist there, which instantly told me I had found the right place. Prices were very “local” with no tourist inflation, and every dish was bursting with flavor.

I ordered snails fried with chili, snails fried with garlic, sea mantis with garlic butter, and scallops with oil and green onions. Every single dish was fresh, perfectly cooked, and loaded with bold, addictive flavors. The pro move here is to buy bread from the lady walking around selling it for 14K VND, because that is the only carb you will get and it is perfect for soaking up all the amazing sauces.

The restaurant is tucked away in a small residential alley that might look intimidating at first. It has that gritty, locals-only vibe where you think only Vietnamese regulars would dare to go. But once inside, it feels completely safe and the payoff is so worth it. While eating, we were helped by a lovely lady sitting next to us who spoke excellent English. She immediately guessed we were not from Vietnam and her first question was how we had found Oc Nhu. That little moment confirmed it: this was a hidden gem that locals love, and it was exactly the kind of authentic food experience I came to Saigon for. Warning… Not for the faint of heart and the valley-girl-slash-UES-type eater. ALSO! Wet wipes are...

🔮Food: 10/10- no argument needed. This certainly isn’t the first time I came here, in fact, I had been introduced to this place by a friend roughly 1-2 years ago and this is my go-to spot every time I wanna enjoy some shellfish Vietnamese style. The shellfish and other options were fresh, cooked just right with the best texture and seasoned to point of perfection.

🔮Atmosphere + restaurant decoration: plain, simple, nothing stand out but compared to 1-2 years ago, the place really took it to another level in terms of hygiene.

🔮Service: I’m not entirely happy with the staff attitude mainly because I don’t feel welcomed to be honest but it makes sense due to the floods of customers going in and out, the staff must have been exhausted day in day out but STILL, in my personal opinion, just excuses. Anyway, if customer’s service isn’t on the top of your priority when choosing an eatery then this is just a grain of sand.

🔮Price: 390.000...

My young local colleagues brought me to this place for lunch. It is located inside a small alley with no advertising along the main road indicating there is a seafood store here. When i arrived for lunch, it was very crowded with office crowds and groups of teenagers. The seafood is fresh, but as my dad told me, any restaurants that have lots of customers will always have fresh food since they will not have much leftovers. The dishes are tasty with many varieties. I especially liked the sauces they cook with the seafood. They also have deep fried Trung Vit Lot which is duck egg fetus. First time i seen it cooked this way and as a foreigner, i feel it is more palatable than the original boiled version. I highly recommend this place. Ask a local to bring you here! Toilet is relatively clean for street food but the seat is missing.
