Santorino coffee & veggies — Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City

Omigosh! This place far exceeded my expectations. The blended iced coconut coffee and the vegan veggie rotis are the most delicious things I’ve had in over a month in Saigon. Woot!

The coconut coffee is normally made with too much ice in my opinion, diluting the flavor. I order it with “very little ice”, and it comes out perfect. The coffee quality must be high, as it doesn’t give me the jitters like some coffee does. Rotis are so flavorful and hit the spot every time.

This is my happy place in Saigon. Service is genuinely friendly, and the calm, relaxed atmosphere is perfect for getting some work done or just decompressing from the noise and chaos outside. LOVE that they accept credit cards! Secure wifi is nice too. I wouldn’t recommend it for a quick visit – they have a quote on the wall about “good things coming to those who wait”, and they aren’t kidding on either count.

Official hours are Tuesday through Sunday 8:30am-12midnight (closed Mondays), but you could always call or message ahead to make sure they’re open. (On my first visit, I showed up at 7:45 which is when Google maps thinks it opens. I hung out at the café next door for over an hour, and when I wandered over at 9:30, the chef told me they didn’t open until 10:30 but graciously agreed to make me some food. They don’t always open this late, but it seems it happens, and a friend told me they aren’t always open until midnight either.)

I had been to Santorino before and enjoyed it. The second visit was however quite disappointing. We came just for a drink and snack. I ordered hot chocolatey and cinnamon, my friend had some juice and a grilled banana roll with almond. I asked the barista what was added to the drink beforehand and he shared there would be fresh milk mixed with chocolate and cinnamon powder. The drink came, just warm, the chocolate and cinnamon was still raw, floating on the surface. The taste was just of fresh milk, the chocolate was not blended in at all. It was bad.

I explained problem of the drink and asked them to heat it up and perhaps mix it a bit more to blend in the chocolate. They brought the cup away and this is what it looked like when brought back. The same unmelted and floating chocolate and cinnamon on the surface. It wasn’t any hotter or tasted any better.

When I expressed that the drink was still not hot, he explained that was the best he could do. They had no microwave etc. and walked away when I was still talking (?!).That was really rude. No further solution was given. The drink gave me bad indigestion for the rest of the evening, likely because the chocolate was still raw.

I liked the place and perhaps focus had been more on food than drink but what I received was really subpar. I hope there will be improvement on drink quality and also staff service and attitude. For now though, don’t think I’m...
