Summer Experiment — Restaurant in Ho Chi Minh City

Since I so honorably got the reply from the owner, let me edit to tell the full unpleasent story, keeping the original review below:

We went to this place and indoor was full so we went outdoor seating, and I was holding my milktea the whole time when we got in, not one single staff comment, I had my milktea on the table we we order drinks, no staff comment, I drank my milktea cuz the drinks took ages and we were thirsty at outdoor seats, no staff comment (and no water is provided), so we thought it was okay and were quite happy and enjoyed the drinks when it came at first half

Then my friend broke the drink and hurt herself when back from washroom (BTW friendly reminder to all the bar owners, when you have super low table, don't use goblet glass as people do stand up at some point), the ground was full of glass so we change seat to inside and put our water and milktea on the table like before. The staff brought iced water to my friend that got hurt, and said we cannot drink our own water in the bar, so we asked can we all have water cuz we need some refreshment after first round, staff said no and SAID WE NEED TO BUY THE WATER IN THE BAR, my friend got water cuz she is hurt and her drinks is broke, and reminded us TWICE RUDELY that WE NEED TO PUT OUR OWN BOTTLE WATER IN OUR BAG AND CANNOT PUT THEM ON THE TABLE, we were so offended and furious and decided to leave. And to correct the owner, NO WATER IS SERVED TO US TILL THE END.

Honestly I went to STIR just the night before, the drinks were okay but staff there were really nice, got water the second we sat down, got good recommendation from bartender, and even got free shots from the bar as tasting. I am the one who brought my friend from STIR to here that night and wanted to try sth new, and I was really embarressed that the night ended badly, and this is the most un-welcomed and unfriendly service I got throughout the whole trip in HCM city. During our recent visit to Ho Chi Minh City, we were told about Summer Experiment when visiting the delicious sister restaurant The WKND. Summer Experiment is a renowned craft cocktail bar located in District 1. The bar’s urban aesthetic was adorned with subtle anime touches, strong metal finishes, bright greenery, moody lighting and a cool display of natural herbs on the bar. The staff immediately set a warm and inviting tone. 

The extensive and beautiful menu boasts a variety of inventive cocktails, each crafted with precision and flair. We loved all our cocktails, which each one embodying the bar’s playful yet sophisticated approach. The happy hour offerings provided excellent value, allowing us to indulge in multiple creations without breaking the bank. The ambiance was elevated by an eclectic music selection, perfectly complementing the bar’s lively atmosphere. The staff’s exceptional service, particularly from Tan, who ensured our experience was memorable, added a personal touch that set Summer Experiment apart. 

As a couple passionate about exploring unique culinary and speakeasy experiences, Summer Experiment exceeded our expectations. The limited food menu was fantastic as well! The combination of innovative mixology, attentive service, and the bar’s distinctive character made it a highlight of our trip. Engaging with Tan and learning about the inspiration behind some of the cocktails added depth to our visit, making it not just a night out, but a memorable adventure.

The atmosphere, food, and drinks at this establishment do not cover up the terrible service. I went to Summer Experiment with a few friends to have some drinks. We all ordered, two people from the menu of craft cocktails and two asked for common, non-specialty drinks. Let me tell you, I should’ve done a non-specialty drink. I ordered the spiced plum gimlet, expecting a plummy taste and ready to be wowed given the reviews and the so-called craftsman’s ship. Well, it was probably one of the worst drinks I have ever had! It was terrible. I asked for them to take it back and ordered two more drinks (which were fine) and some food (which was really great). Then, the checks came. My horrible drink, which no one enjoyed at our table, was still on my check. I asked them to please take it off, as it was really, really disgusting and I was sure something was wrong with it. In response, the waiter was incredibly rude, yelled at me, and demanded I pay because it wasn’t his fault I didn’t like a drink I ordered. Terrible customer service. He responded with this very fast, a knee-jerk reaction, as if it (someone a cocktail and sending it back because it’s gross) happens often. I would’ve been okay with paying for the drink, even, but the way he handled the situation has soured my mood and my appreciation of this bar, which is unfortunate, because it seemed cool other than having the rudest waiters ever.
