கும்பகோணம் கிழக்கு பகுதியில் உள்ள பக்தபுரி தெருவில் உள்ளது இக்கோயில்.

ஊழிக்காலத்தில் பிரளய வெள்ளம் ஏற்பட்டபோது பிரம்மனால் விடப்பட்ட அமுதகுடம் மிதந்து வந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. அப்போது கயிலையில் இருந்து வேட வடிவத்தில் வந்த சிவபெருமான் ஒரு பாணத்தால் அந்தகுடத்தை உடைத்தார். சிவன் பாணம் தொடுத்த இடம் என்பதால் பாணாத்துறை எனப்பட்டது.

இறைவனுக்கு பாணபுரீஸ்வரர் என்ற பெயர் உருவானது. இதன்பிறகே குடத்திலிருந்த அமுதம் பெருகி மகாமக குளமாக வடிவெடுத்தது.

Banapuriswarar Temple is a Hindu templelocated in the town of Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu, India. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva.According to Hindu mythology, the site was the place from where Shiva took his aim at a pot of amrita with his bow and arrow.

The Mahasamprokshanam also known as Kumbabishegam of the temple was held on 26 October 2015.
