Whenever we have the chance, we like to rediscover the blowhole in Bicheno. It’s a highlight of any visit to the lovely seaside village on the east coast of Tasmania. The swell of the ocean can be unpredictable. A wise photographer will stand back until they’ve experienced several bursts of water, and only then attempt to capture the blowhole in Bicheno in all its glory. We seem to forever claim to “love” the town we’re writing about. What can we say? There’s not too many places in the state we don’t like. Evey Tasmanian town and region has features, highlights and reasons to be adored. Bicheno is no exception. A diamond-shaped rock marks the location of the blowhole. We were able to walk across the road from our holiday house in Bicheno, but you can drive and park your car on The Esplenade nearby. Alternatively, take the short walk (about three or four kms) along the coastline from Diamond Island near Bicheno Ocean View Retreat. On our last trek to the east coast, we noticed a Little Penguin seemingly wedged between the rocks near the blowhole in Bicheno. We were quite worried about the poor creature, knowing he wouldn’t usually be seen during daylight hours. But we didn’t want to scare him by getting too close, and thankfully he eventually made his own way back to the water. Of course, there’s plenty of other tourists attractions and things to do to keep you amused on a visit to the east coast of Tasmania. Besides the beautiful sandy beaches, there’s shopping in Bicheno; Douglas Apsley National Park and East Coast Natureworld, for starters. We’re just saying the blowhole in Bicheno is worth...

Let me preface this by saying, I'm not one for tourist traps. But the Bicheno Blowhole? It surprised me. It's not some grand spectacle, but there's a certain rawness to it that I found captivating.

Standing there, the wind whipping my hair, I watched the ocean churn and crash against the jagged rocks. Then, BOOM! A jet of water erupted from the hole in the ground, spraying the unsuspecting (or perhaps overly enthusiastic) tourists right next to the viewing platform. Laughter, shrieks, and the surprised yelps of people getting soaked filled the air. I couldn't help but grin.

It's a simple thing, really. Just a hole in the rock and the power of the ocean. But there's something about the unpredictable nature of it, the way the blowhole can go from calm to explosive in an instant, that makes it oddly thrilling. Plus, the bonus of seeing people get a little (or a lot) wet never hurts.

If you're looking for fancy or awe-inspiring, the Bicheno Blowhole might not be your cup of tea. But if you're up for a bit of fun and a reminder of the ocean's untamed power, it's definitely worth a visit. Just maybe bring a raincoat,...

The best part? You never know when the next big spray will come, adding an element of suspense to the experience. It's all part of the fun of visiting this iconic Tasmanian attraction.

Have you heard of Bicheno? Information below 👇 Australia bucketlist item 10/100 📍 Diamond Island, off Bicheno Tasmania. ✨️ One of our favourite places in Tassie, theres an airbnb you can book which is directly out the front of Diamond island! Walk to this island during LOW TIDE ONLY! Unless you want to swim back. 🏊‍♀️ like we nearly did haha. For some rockpool hopping, or just for the adventures of the walk across the sand bank. 🏄‍♀️ 🌊 🏄‍♂️ You can surf at Redbill beach too. Watch for the penguins at night! 🐧 🐧 🐧 they come running into their homes where their babies await after their parents have fished all day. Other sites nearby: 🌞 Freycinet National Park 🍷 Coles Bay and Wineglass Bay ☕️ Bicheno in general 🥰 fish and chips and awesome coffee there. Go to the communal garden! 💨 Bicheno blowhole Up north is Binalong Bay and the free camping at the Bay of Fires. Highly recommend a few days spent there too 🔥 I know we shared this before but it had to go on the list! 🤩 What other islands can you walk to? . . . #diamondisland #australiabucketlist #bucketlist #islandyoucanwalkto #tasmania #visittassie #bicheno #visittasmania #australianislands
