This is a hillside nature reserve at Bicheno that is a nice place to visit by way of a short uphill walk. In the 1800's this was a lookout point for passing whales. Those tasked with keeping watch would then signal down to the whaling stations when whales were sighted so the boats could begin their hunt.
Today, you can walk a well beaten pathway up to the Whalers Lookout hillside and take in a couple of nice viewpoints, one overlooking the town of Bicheno and beaches to the north while the other views the foreshore point, rock islands and Tasman sea directly east and southward. Read moreThe only way to get to this lookout is walking up the hill and it’s very much worth it. The views are stunning, we came early in the morning and loved watching the sun rise. There are two main lookouts and you can do a circuit once you get to the top of the mountain to view both.

Read moreGorgeous views over water and city. It takes about 20 minutes round trip to walk the circuit if your a decently fit person. Not an overly hard trek but you do have to manuver carefully if it's wet. The trek is uphill and you have to easily climb up rock stairs that are uneven. On the other side of the hill you can see the governors island/state reserve. Only a 2 minute hike past whalers point....
