Go for take-away, not for the boat shed
S41°52.417' E148°18.627' On the harbour front of Bicheno, this fish & chips shop has expanded its activities to include a boat shed to eat fish. Order at the front, take-away at the back or eat in the shed. Beside fish, there is also beer and Tasmanian wine per glass are for sale. The name “The Gulch” refers to the craggy rockscape of the small Governor Island and the Bicheno shoreline in this deep ocean ravine, where the town's fishing fleet shelters from the Tasman Sea swells.
The shop for ordering is an old shed without fish on display in the refrigerated counter. The staff member looked like a stranded fisherman in a fish shop. Just look at the blackboard and order, then go to the back and wait. The boat shed depends on self-service, protects you from the weather and the seagulls, offers a toilet, but is not a place to eat. Actually, this is mainly a place for take-away and eat at home in the comfort of your house.
In February of 2020, we ordered a fish basket with 4 pieces of two kind of fish (perch and shark), shrimps and scallops ($45). The fish was fresh and...

It said oysters. I love fresh oysters.
We ordered and the lady yelled "John!!!! 12!"
We waited and waited. Had a few drinks. We were wondering what was taking so long.
About 20 minutes later a 10 year old kid with a bucket came in from the pier and says "here Mum!".
Bucket of oysters.
She shucked them (probably shocked them a little too,), cut up 3 lemons and servers them on ice.
Best and most fresh oysters I've ever had. Not sure if his name was John, but.something like that. Maybe Steve. Anyway I hope he got whatever job he wanted.or runs this fish and chips shop and teaches his kids how to find the best seafood in the world. Which only Tazzie, Portugal and Norway have to offer (Japan buys our best fish at over $6000 for the best tuna and surprisingly they buy our best beef. You havent eaten the best Aussie beef unless you've visited Japan). Anyway great experience Sooooo local. Half way down the coast of Tassie. I'll never forget it. ...
Read moreWhat a hidden gem! Happened upon this place looking for a feed and definitely wasn't disappointed. From the front, The Gulch looks like a run of the mill, moderately crappy fish and chips joint. However, upon further inspection, the restaurant opens up into a picturesque shallow inlet perfect for dining. Ordered the whiting and local boar fish battered and grilled, absolutely delicious. Also had $10 worth of fabulous crispy chips which was more than enough for five hungry travellers. Even the little Mediterranean salad that came with our meal was fresh and yummy. All of this was topped off by a Blues Brother vinyl in the protection of a super cute upcycled boathouse overlooking the bay. With a bit more signage, this place would be absolutely booming. Maybe the locals like it better this way, and honestly I can't blame them! Best fish and chips I've had in a...
