Memorial of lives lost and lessons unlearned as many died of the same causes e.g. fell down shaft....??? and yet no safety measures in place to prevent recurrences. A tragic record of lives lost unnecessarily in the pursuit of wealth for the mining company. More old mining machinery on top of the heap would have made the memorial more interesting. We visited on Sunday and decided to go to the cafe for lunch.😕. Some nice food in the cabinets, but the kitchen was closed so when the food was all gone... nothing! If you order a drink, specify only two ice cubes, or you will get a glass full of ice. Broken Hill is trying to transition to tourism but most of the locals are unable to grasp the concept that they will have to work when the tourists are there and provide nice meals 7 days a week or their...

This miners memorial looks dramatic perched on the hill behind the town of Broken Hill. It's a wonderful tribute to the hundreds of miners who have lost their life over the years with names, dates and causes of death listed inside. There is mining equipment scattered around with explanations of what it's used for. There is a platform to walk out on that is over a minig pit. It's a great place to be at sunset with views over the town and beyond. Lots of parking available Also the location of the big bench seat The cafe and toilets however are all locked up with no mention on their website about being closed (visited about 2 weeks ago) so don't get caught short or think you can get a snack...

What a joke.

The website says it's open until 9pm. The visitor info centre told us the same....... We visited at 5:30pm only to find the restaurant / gift shop closed, and you must go through that to access the memorial. Six others, including overseas visitors, turned up while we were there, and together we decided to jump the fence and view the memorial. It's not a safe practice, but what else do you do??

The memorial itself is simple, but touching place. So many deaths.....

Get your act together Broken Hill and provide a safe, 24hr access...

I love the big rock face view on the way up to the top. Bring a jacket, it's usually windy outside Summer time. Don't wear thin heels, the memorial nearby has steel mesh cat walks. It's a great view from near the restaurant ove the town and the memorial position, offers more viewing over to the Mines. I eat my lunch here when I'm in town; something that doesn't require a table or chairs, but there are concrete stadium type seating, in front of the restaurant (that's not operating yet).

A somber place where the lost lives of miners are enshrined, as young as 15 years old. Some 895 have been lost over time and even though safety is a lot better today it would still be a risky job. The views from this memorial over Broken Hill gives a clear view of the town and further to North and West. It would be a great spot for a nighttime photo. No cafe, no toilet, steel mesh walkway and pretty cold in May. Plenty of parking and items of mining interest
