Hidden Gems of Australia: How Many Have You Visited?

This place is pretty amazing set over 3 levels right in the heart of Darwin CBD. Lost a star because the aquarium with fish, turtles and Sting rays could be .... cleaner? Brighter? It's pretty dark and I'm not sure what can be done with that. It's the first exhibit you come across and it should be more of a WoW factor. The crocs are *huge*, the "cage of death" looks fun (if the croc doesn't move in the enclosure they will move you around to another pen. 'Will' was the winner for today and put on a good. Cage of Death has a time frame of 15mins for $195 (single occupant). The reptile house is amazing and when we walked through there was lovely young Lady with a snake and Blue Tounge Lizard "Steven" that you can hold. These guys are really chilled and there were a few younger kids before us that got to hold them, and waved them through the air and chased their siblings around with them and they didn't seemed phased. Take your bathers, there's a little swimming pool you can take a dip in - the lost star includes this pool - it was filled with leaves and a bit neglected. Could do with a clean as you kick up the silt on the bottom and can't get a good photo of the crocs 'swimming' beside you (swimming with the crocs 🤔). There is a little Cafe on the 2nd floor and some tables and chairs to chillaxe at. The staff are knowledgeable and friendly. As NT Residents we got a year pass for free entry - NT Locals Pass which also gets further discounts at various cafes, cruises, fishing charters, hotels. #winning

We had a wonderful time at this delightful place! The environment was fun, and the staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. We even got the unique opportunity to hold a crocodile and a snake, and fed the crocs—definitely memorable moments during our stay in Darwin. However, there was a bit of affecting the mood with one of the staff members who kept reminding us not to photograph the participants diving with the "Cage of Death" crocs. Respecting her wishes, I focused my photos on the crocodiles themselves and carefully avoiding the participants. Despite this, two staff members stand close to me, staring at me and discussing something like, "I have told him!" in a manner that felt somewhat dismissive. I understand the importance of their guidelines and although I am a tourist I understand English well and knew that they were discussing me indeed. I have thought of showing them my photos to demonstrate my compliance... ultimately, I chose not to. It was a bit disappointing to encounter this unnecessary tension during what was otherwise a lovely experience in Darwin.

When researching activities and the like, to do in Darwin. I wondered why there was the ability to have a crocodile experience in the main drag of Darwin. Now I've been, all is apparent. Pools are small, crocs are big, reptiles less exciting than a colonoscopy. But, and there's no pun intended I would probs come again. If you want to swim, and by swim I mean get dunked into the water next to a croc. Yep, like a human flavoured tea bag; or better still, like a human Korean hot pot, teasing just a few cm's away a killing machine desperate to learn how to open said Perspex feed trough without opposable thumbs. Or, in the case of Wendell, a missing arm and foot. Entry to the joint was $40 for an adult, but if you want to do anything other than walk around looking, you'll have to stump ( sorry Wendell) some more reddies. If you want to feel like a crocodilians lunch, it's over $200 extra samolies. If you like your animals fluffy and cute, you're bang out of luck in the reptile house. Lots off deadly killing machines that'll have you wondering why you either, stay in Australia, or indeed, came to visit. But the geckos are cool, and as it's inside you get to cool off for a while. Again, if the sprogs haven't seen snakes, lizards and the like, take em in, tell em scary stories and enjoy the next few years of them not going outside. On the plus, you can get a pass out, allowing you back in any time the same day - not sure why you would, unless the swim with the croc has literally made you soil yourself, and there's a need to go and get a change of Reg Grundy. Fish feeding explanation was great for the kids, but only highlighted how crap a fisherman I am, as just by dangling a piece of sardine in the water, the keeper got large barramundi to come to the surface for a feed - easily within range of a net. Try this in any of the top end rivers and you'll be pulled in and dismantled limb from limb by the local swimming bitey handbags. There's plenty of vantage points to look at the big crocs just laying around or watch the slightly less large American tourist wander around waiting to be wowed and entertained. During big croc feeding, the crocs may not play the game, and if they start behaving in a manner similar to Andrew O'Keefe - allegedly stalking, they will move to another pen/pool. My advice is to head downstairs to the underwater viewing windows, as you'll get the same show as the human cage, but without the cost. There's a nice cafe under fans - that's the twisty air moving type, not the looking for autograph ones. I got an iced latte, which actually tasted of coffee. There's also a shop where you can purchase items made in China, showing you visited a tourist attraction in Darwin. It's a little run down in areas - rusty metal work, rotten steps, but it's all part of the NT charm. Why let Southern sensibilities get in the way of making a living. It killed a few hours, got me to see a croc without having to sacrifice a pet, or indeed a child, so job done. Open your mind and your wallets and you'll have a great time.

Seems like the main attraction here is the croc death cage experience. Normal entry ($36) is a lot for what really equates as a very small wildlife park/aquarium. There are probably 5 large salt water croc enclosures, a small reptile house, a single large fish aquarium tank and a room with taxidermy crocodile specimens. Meet the Reptiles was just a children's python and blue tongue lizard being passed around. Seeing toddlers handle them while not seated made me nervous. I was expecting a bit more. The fish feeding, couldn't hear a thing because no microphone was used by the presenter. The croc feeding - do geriatric crocs like being teased repeatedly to jump out of the water for a tiny piece of meat? I don't know. They would burn more calories than the tiny morsel being provided. Making the 90yr old croc 'perform' several times with near misses for food seemed a bit much especially given the creature only has one eye. Maybe time to give the big fella a rest in retirement? Suggestion: get a snacks vending machine to go with your drinks one. I was looking for a morning snack (pkt of chips or chocolate bar) and your cafe didnt provide them. I ended up getting a passout to eat outside. Also upgrade your drink machines to accept card or note payment. Hard to have enough coins on you these days. I struggled to spend 2hrs here (taking in 3 activities) and including my 30min pass out for food. Plan accordingly. Sydney Zoo lays claim to the largest collection of Australian reptiles and having been there many times (its 10 times the size of your setup with many more reptiles) think you need to update your tagline.
