Salamanca Markets There are all sorts of markets around Hobart where you can grab a bite to eat. The Salamanca markets are hands down the best to visit with some of the best places to sample fresh local produce. Salamanca markets are synonymous with food and Hobart. We had a great experience at these markets and were impressed with the variety on offer. The markets were way bigger than we expected. Tip: get there nice and early, the markets officially open at 8:30am. We arrived at 8am and most stores were already set up and this gave us the opportunity to explore without the crowds. The famous scallop pie by Smiths Pies was right at the top of our list. It was noted by a number of people that this sells out quickly. We made a v line straight to the caravan and were first in line. At 8 bucks a pie they are reasonably priced, a delicious pie with flacky pastry packed with plenty of scallops with roe and flavoured with a light curry gravy, this pie is well worth a crack if visiting the markets. Then there was all of the fresh produce seafood including oysters, salmon and more. The fruit and veg on offer is as fresh as can be, we tried some delicious apples! Then there are the baked goods, one of our favourites being the Cygnet wood fired bakery. Their almond croissants were top notch, they were crisp and flakey on the outside and light and airy on the inside. There are also plenty of places to grab a coffee and some amazing donuts from Cream Coffee. The markets also have artisans selling truffles, beef Jerky, cheeses, honey olive oil, seasonings, honey, mustards and preserves amongst plenty more. There are plenty of crafts too from leather goods to antiques and jewellery. You can certainly spend hours exploring.

As someone who loves exploring local markets wherever I travel, I couldn't miss the famed Salamanca Market in Hobart. And let me tell you, it truly lived up to the hype! The atmosphere was electric. Bustling crowds weaved between stalls overflowing with an incredible variety of goods. The historic sandstone warehouses lining the market added a unique charm, transporting me back in time. What impressed me most was the sheer talent and passion on display. From delicate handmade jewelry to intricately carved wooden crafts, each stall showcased the work of local artisans. I couldn't resist picking up a beautiful scarf woven from Tasmanian wool, a perfect souvenir to remember my trip. But the market wasn't just about shopping, it was a sensory feast. The air was filled with the aroma of freshly baked bread and sizzling sausages, making my stomach rumble. Live music drifted through the crowd, adding to the vibrant energy. I even stumbled upon a stall offering free samples of local cheeses and jams – delicious! Sure, the market was crowded, and navigating the throngs of people could be a bit of a challenge. But honestly, that just added to the lively atmosphere and made the experience all the more memorable. If you're ever in Hobart, don't miss the Salamanca Market. It's a must-visit for anyone who appreciates local crafts, delicious food, and a touch of history, all rolled into one.

There is an amazing street market only set up on Saturday mornings, it's one of Australia's largest outdoor markets. The rest of Salamanca square has shops/restaurants/galleries but the Saturday morning outdoor market is a must-see! There's a little bit of everything!! Lots of great gift ideas or just window shopping! The stalls are well-arranged and well-balanced throughout (e.g. not 5 jewellery stalls in a row). Some things I saw were: Home decor, textiles, clothing, accessories, jewellery/accessories (glasswork, beadwork, woodwork, leatherwork), artwork (prints, paintings, stationery), spirits, beer, cider, produce (fruits and veg), cured meats and cheeses, a great variety of take-away food vendors and more! There are a few areas to sit and eat or you can walk a little further to find a place on the grass or public square. Like many other outdoor markets there are vendors with these things but I found that a lot of the stuff here was quite unique and beautifully Tasmanian made with pride! Not like some markets I've been to internationally where there are a lot of repetitive and cheap imports being sold... a lot of items were quite clever and cute. I'm really glad I included a Saturday morning for my short stay in Hobart Visited April 2024

Salamanca Market is one of the best markets we've been to. Open every Saturday from 8:30am to 3pm, the market offers a wonderful assortment of amazing food, beautiful artwork/homeware and fresh produce. Keen to try scallops that aren't in a Curried Scallop Pie, we were drawn to the long queue at the Seafood Grill stall. The jovial pirate-dressing staff served Scallop Stick with sweet potato, garlic and miso butter ($15), and it did not disappoint. The savoury juicy scallops combined with the sweetness of the sweet potato were incredible. The coffee at Stand by Me Espresso was the best we had in Tasmania - big tick there. The sourdough donuts served by Lady Hester were also worth trying. We got the vanilla custard with pistachio, as well as the chocolate ganache and almond brittle. The donuts were fluffy and there was a good selection of fancy flavours to choose from. We purchased a beautiful print of the Cascade Brewery from a lovely stall holder, Martin Chambers. Martin was very friendly and more than happy to share his photographic journey. As every tourist in Hobart seems to descend on the area every Saturday, we would recommend visiting the market early.

such an amazing experience! stalls of locals and their products all lined up endlessly from one end to the other, with each stall bringing you quality craftsmanship! there is something for everyone from wood works, knit works, glass wear, mugs, toys, plants, whisky, gin, beer, wine, cheese, honey and all the food trucks and so much more!! here you can also find the infamous Scallop Pies which are a must try! i also had the Pulled BBQ Pork Sandwich which was my absolute favourite!!! dont forget to go around for all the whisky/gin/wine/beer tasting and grab yourself some Chilli Ginger Beer! perfect for them sunny warm days! very little social distancing though, however the staff ate doing their best to ensure everyone has checked in before entering, providing tokens (clean tokens) to excuse yourself to the toilet, and plenty of hand sanitizer around! definitely would recommend a visit if you are in hobart on Saturday!!!
