This is a large hotel in central Hobart, a part of the Marriott-Bonvoy chain. There’s a nice review by Condé Nast Traveler which you should read. It describes a lot of the positives - nice rooms, pleasant staff, central location to Salamanca markets, the CBD, bars and dining options, and the harbour front attractions. We’ve stayed here three times. Each time for 2-3 nights. The first two stays were on level 7 in a modern room. The room faced the city and was spacious enough to accommodate luggage with room to spare. When we stayed a week ago we were assigned a similarly fitted out city view room but this time on level 3. Noticeably not as spacious. Also the hot water in the shower took quite a bit of time to come through… might as well brush your teeth while you wait. Word of caution - regarding the join between the carpet and the tiles in the room entry area - the nails of the baton which keeps the carpet in place will jab you. Be mindful to step over this area when you’re not wearing shoes otherwise you will pierce your skin. Just like the hotel room, the in-house food and beverage is important to us. Our evening flight arrival results in us getting to the hotel just after the daytime room service has concluded. (The overnight room service is quite limited compared to other hotels of similar standards). However, after our first experience we were grateful that on subsequent stays we had discovered that, by calling ahead to guest services, choices from the more substantial day menu could be ordered and be delivered to our room shortly after check in. Such a nice way to start the stay. Peppina is a large room used for breakfast/lunch/dinner. We’ve not had lunch here, but dinner was an enjoyable experience. Breakfast is a substantial affair. Once seated you’re asked for your coffee and egg order. You can help yourself at the hot & cold buffets. The hot buffet is typical of other hotels - cooked mushrooms & tomatoes, potatoes, pancakes. The meat offering is bacon or sausages, which also contain pork. So if you want a halal or kosher, or simply a non-pork meat option, you won’t get it here. The cold buffet is extensive and varied. There’s a strong Italian theme here (unsurprisingly) - try the salads and vege dishes. As for cold cuts, there’s about three or four Italian-style pork products. No beef, no lamb, no chicken. So if you don’t like or won’t eat pork, your only option is the salmon. As for cheeses you have 2-3 Tassie cheeses to choose from. So I’ve been trying to make sense of The Tasman’s food approach. For a hotel that touts itself as Tasmanian by virtue of its name and the locally-sourced products, why does it need a non-Australian cultural food identity to trade on? Surely international visitors don’t travel all the way to Hobart just to get the same sort of food that they could get at home? Mary Mary is a nice bar to spend in the evenings. A generous selection of cocktails and snacks are offered. Definitely try the lamb skewers. Overall, go visit.

Our stay at the Tasman was delightful from check in arrival through to check out. We arrived early on the Sunday morning and were greeted by Nick the concierge who looked after our luggage as it was too soon for our rooms to be ready. Nick and the other Concierge Julian looked after us really well during our stay, giving us recommendations, providing us with umbrellas when it was raining, and helping us sort out some laundry that needed to be urgently done.

At the reception we were served an arrival drink as we checked in which was nice. The reception advised us that she would try to get our room ready earlier and gave us some great advice in terms of local attractions to check out such as the Farmer's market. We then went out exploring Hobart.

We were contacted just after midday to be advised that our room was ready for us. We then went back to the hotel to freshen up and our room was wonderful. We had a gorgeous view over the harbour, our room was spotlessly clean and the auto opening blind and curtains was a nice touch. Bathroom was well appointed with quality toiletries and the touch pad interface to operate the lights was nice.

We had a daily breakfast at Peppina's restaurant and during week days it was all you can eat ala carte. We loved the personalised service that we received where our hosts Gurpreet and Leticia were exceptional. They had memorised our drink preferences so each morning when we walked in they would prepare and bring our coffee and drink orders over, followed by a fruit platter to cleanse our palate before we would order our breakfast. There were so many choices and you could add unlimited sides, included smoked ocean trout, grilled Portabello mushrooms, polenta chips, etc. We actually preferred this to the weekend breakfast buffet as our meals were brought straight to our table. It should be noted though that the breakfast buffet has a wonderful spread of breakfast options and more variety than the weekday ala carte option so either way we were happy.

We also spent a few nights in the Mary Mary Bar where we enjoyed the wonderful and personable customer service of Andrew, Deep and Thomas. Over the 3 night that we spent in the bar we enjoyed expertly prepared cocktails and a wonderful selection of bar snacks. Stand outs were the Hot Toddy cocktail which was a Winter special and the Lemon Meringue Sorbet dessert. The dessert was so good that one night when my wife was too tired to come down to Mary Mary for the dessert I went to the bar, ordered two servings and brought it back up to our room.

We checked out the gym while we were there and it was well equipped with a variety of free weights (kettle bells) and machines. There were neatly stacked fresh towels and a fridge well stocked with bottled water. Really well laid out and thoughtful.

We only ordered a coffee from the Deco Lounge but we did see that they had an amazing high tea on offer as a number of other guests had ordered it. The lounge had very comfortable seats and a lovely outdoor courtyard area.

Location wise, the hotel is perfectly placed. You can access all of the marinas in the harbour, Salamanca Place and the CBD within a short 2-5 minute walk. In fact, if you exit the hotel from the back entrance (near the Mary Mary bar) on a Saturday morning you literally are at the start of one end of the famous Salamanca Market.

Thank you to the staff at the Tasman for such a wonderful stay. Your service and facilities are absolutely top notch. We...

From the very first moment we pulled up in front of the hotel, to when we approached one of the desks for check-in, until we checked ou, the Tasman team were amazing and their demeaner to us was superb!

We pulled up in our car and we met Taka who offered his help with our luggage and parking our car. We walked into the front office and right away were helped by Joshua who make our stay very memorable. He was extremely friendly, offering us something to drink, checking us in and providing advice on what to see and where to go around town. We got so many great tips and everything we were told was spot on! Joshua was warm and exceptionally nice.We were then brought up to the room by Taka and he also gave some great suggestions for Hobart.

I also mentioned how I wanted a room with a good view facing the bay. On our return to stay a second time at the hotel, we were pleasantly surprised and happy that we got a great room. I also had some cake and champagne served to me for my birthday, which was such a lovely thought! That really made my day. The next few days, we enjoyed breakfast at Peppina and were helped each day by Louis, the manager of the restaurant. He was lovely too. He cheerfully greeted us whenever we saw him for breakfast and filled in on the history of the restaurant, the hotel, and the area in general. The breakfast at Peppina was simply delicious with an abundance of home-grown produce and was a great place to have breakfast. It was beautifully designed with a lot of natural light coming into the main area. Louis insisted we have Italian for dinner at Peppina. Every morsel of food we had was mouthwatering. Prices were well worth it for food of such quality. We are so glad we gave the place a try!

We also had drinks at Mary Mary and had exceptional service and conversation with the French manager on shift. He made us great cocktails and gave me a list of places to buy certain produce that I asked him about. We came back a few days later to see him, but unfortunately was not on shift earlier at night. As I was recovering from a cold and wanted something fresh and light, I was recommended a great Mocktail Thank you so much! I think what makes this place are the people who we mentioned. They are such a warm bunch who really want to provide quality service. All in all, every person we met at the hotel was gracious and never hesitated to spend time talking with us and giving us all their attention each time. I have already recommended the restaurant and the place to my friends. We will be sure to return here when we are next time in Hobart. Room Service, Location & overall Service was excellent.

Joshua, Taka, Louis and shift French manager at Mary Mary and those who gave us a smile, thank you so much! Hope we can see you again...
