With my latest escapade to Hobart, there was nothing better than topping off a day of exploring with a good restaurant for a burger. I know that the Salamanca Markets are renowned for their seafood, but seafood allergy in another state is hardly a thing to scoff at.
And hey, if you can do burgers right, then you can win my heart, Hobart.
The gauntlet was thrown down to Jack Greene.
Set right in the heart of the Salamanca Markets, this is one place that you literally couldn’t afford to go past.
The aromatic smells of all the quaint pubs automatically pull you in. Jack Greene is a multi-level pub with the bottom more like a bar and the upstairs a cozy gathering surrounded by books on one side, a lodging feature on the other and finally a picturesque view of the bay.
I chose the peri-peri chicken with a side order of Tassie wine (unfortunately I couldn’t find the name and didn’t write it down…must mean I need to go back and re-visit, right?)
First of all, those chips were heavenly. The crunch in your mouth and the hard coated exterior with the soft warm interior. Oh, you know how to win a man’s heart, Tassie.
Then the peri-peri chicken. Wow. The bacon. The melted cheese all drizzled in peri-peri heaven. I was in love, from the first bite to the last. This one burger was good with the only flaw being that it wasn’t big enough to fill my man-sized hunger. I would recommend it hands down!
What more can I say? This was one amazing trip and Jack Greene really capped off the event. Go for the views, stay for the food – you won’t be...
Read moreMy partner and I made our way down to Salamanca Place after a boozy late lunch at The Chowk and a quick stop at The Whaler for a game of pool.
We just beat the dinner rush and snagged a table in the warm interior next to the bar, where they had a variety of dark beers as part of Dark Mofo. I'm not a huge fan of dark beers, but the Penut Butter Porter was really interesting.
We grabbed a bowl of tempura broccoli which was fairly average, but what really blew us away was the six types of sliders that we sampled for dinner. The salmon wasn't quite to our taste and I found the hallumi a little bland (possibly because I removed the tomato though). The cheeseburger was as good as you'd expect of a classic and the spiced pulled pork really hit the spot. I found it exceedingly difficult to pick my favourite out of the braised beef with delectable crunchy slaw and the perfectly cooked eye fillet mignon with balsamic onion jam, as both of these were absolutely gorgeous to taste. Would recommend stopping in at Jack Greene to try all six yourself if you're around...
Read moreWe were advised that one of our parties burgers toppled after being made. These things happen, we understand -no big deal.
But his burger arrived 25 or so minutes after everyone else had finished eating and plates cleared. We requested additional food (chips) for him whilst he waited, and unfortunately were told that chips etc were allocated to previously made orders. No offer of anything.
We also asked for no tomato in 2 burgers when ordering. This included the late burger. Both arrived with tomato, including the late burger even though we politely reminded the team.
Overall a disappointing experience, one person eating 25 mins after everyone else’s meals are finished and cleared with nothing provided.
Food was delicious and staff polite, but definitely not good enough especially given the overall price -for us it’s a special night out.
I do wonder if wait staff did not feel confident to offer a refund or at least some chips or a drink to the person...
