We were genuinely excited to have lunch at The Whaler, a well-known spot in Hobart with a lunch menu that sounded great especially the famous lobster roll. Unfortunately, the food turned out to be overly salty, to the point where it was difficult to enjoy. When we politely shared our feedback with a staff member at the bar named James, who was sitting with a woman named Ella, the response was surprisingly dismissive. James said, “Most Australian foods are salty,” which felt condescending, especially since one of us is Australian. Ella laughed, which made the moment feel even more uncomfortable. We weren’t looking for a refund or a replacement just offering honest feedback. What made the experience worse was the way we were treated throughout the interaction. There was a distinct lack of professionalism and respect, which left a sour taste, far worse than the salt in the food. Great food means little when hospitality is lacking. We were a group of friends hoping for a nice lunch out, but sadly, we left disappointed and unwelcome.

As the most bustling bar in Salamanca Place, the outdoor seating at The Whaler is always packed with lively patrons. This iconic pub offers an extensive collection of local wines, craft beers and exciting cocktails. Their tasty lobster roll ($31) was paired with citrus and chive mayo, and accompanied with the best fries I've had in Hobart. We also ordered the Mussels Bowl ($26) with extra bread ($3). The Spring Bay mussels were cooked in an amazing tomato, chilli, white wine and garlic sauce. The sauce has a bit of a spicy kick to it; and we made a good call to order extra bread to soak up that sauce.

While the dining area may be minimal, my friend and I sat by a warm fireplace and sat comfortably in an ambiently lit room. Country blues style music rang through the building amid the chit chat of other patrons. The food was plentiful at a reasonable price, with hearty burgers and plentiful chips. Their sauce options were commendable. It mostly excels as a bar, with plenty of drink options and friendly staff that deliver quick and friendly service. Another worthy note are the glass murals that adorn the bar, giving the place a distinctive character.

Unfortunately myself and 3 others came into your establishment last night being Sunday 24th April for an after dinner drink. We were minding our own business when a lady approached us who clearly looked like she had taken some type of medication and was shaking her body at us aggressively. We asked her to go away , eventually she did but then your bouncer who was standing at the door came over to us and started be very verbally abusive. Claiming we were being inappropriate and he was watching us. . After that my husband came back from the bar with his drink and was dancing just around where we were standing, which there wasn't anyone else around us and your bouncer who was obviously drunk with power came back over and was very inappropriate once again. I did retaliate back before we left but we are four older adults who most definitely did not act in any way to deserve such disgraceful behaviour from your staff and will never again grace your establishment and will never recommend it to anyone. And to let someone in who was clearly high on drugs and do nothing about that is...

The words 'gourmet' and 'pub food' don't usually go together but this place is absolutely amazing, me and the boys make it a mission to come in at least every fortnight to get the wings here. Everything on the menu is of exceptional standards, well priced for what you get, everything is so fresh and tasty it's remarkable really, it's clear the chef takes a lot of pride in their work. They have a massive selection of beer, whiskey, gin, vodka basically whatever you could possibly want branded or craft and if by some reason they don't have exactly what you'd like the terrific and helpful bar staff will go above and beyond to suggest something similar. Good selection of local brews on tap. The decor is beautifully old fashioned with an oak bar and stained glass pictures around the place, old posters and a fireplace in the corner which really allows you to encapsulate that this place is a little over 180 years old. This is the undeniable pinnacle of how a bar in...
