I’ve visited Albert Park, particularly around the walking track, quite a few times as a local Melbournian. Some of my favourite visits have been during the Melbourne New Year’s Eve celebrations from 2023 to 2025. Each year, just before midnight, our group walks over from a friend’s place in Prahran which is only about ten minutes from the main strip, and we head to the park to watch the fireworks over the city skyline.
There’s usually plenty of parking and trams nearby, so it’s an accessible spot year round. However on New Year’s Eve, around midnight, cars along the surrounding roads tend to stop moving, and people get out to see what’s going on. Everyone just pauses to take in the fireworks, and the atmosphere turns into this relaxed, joyful celebration that spills onto the street.
The park itself is a beautiful space. With the lake in the centre, palm trees along the shore, and wide grassy areas, there’s more than enough room for everyone to comfortably gather. We’ve seen people set up camp chairs and picnic blankets, big family groups spread out under trees, and couples tucked into quiet spots by the water. Even when it’s busy, it never feels overcrowded.
Outside of New Year’s, I think Albert Park is a gorgeous place to spend the day. It’s peaceful, open, and perfect for a picnic or a gentle wander. There’s plenty of wildlife with birds and swans always roaming around. While you can’t swim in the lake, it’s a lovely view and adds to the calm of the park. On weekdays, it’s quiet, and even on weekends there’s enough room to find your own spot to unwind. The walking and cycling tracks that loop around the park make it a great option for exercise too, especially if you like a bit of nature and a scenic backdrop. Everything is well maintained and accessible, and the city views never get old.
If you’re in Melbourne, I’d really recommend checking out Albert Park. Whether you’re going for a big event like the fireworks or just looking for somewhere relaxing to sit in the sun, it’s a perfect inner city escape. St Kilda and Prahran are both just ten minutes away, so there are loads of great food options nearby if you want to make a day of it. It’s one of those places that just makes you appreciate how special...
Read moreIf you visit to Melbourne city, taking a walk in the evening about sunset time to Albert park is a must. The views of reflection of the city on the water is amazing and the golden hour hits different. The bushes, palm trees and the ducks adds all the difference and is very relaxing and peaceful. If I lived in Melbourne I would have taken the walk everyday. Not to mention the sound of the birds above the trees is awesome and is a natural heaven. It is much much much recommended. You can also take your bike for a ride around the pond. Across the road you can see the golf field which also looks...
Read moreI have always loved the area, with so many cafés, restaurants, sports venues and the Olympic standard Aquatic Centre(build for the 1956 Olympics) within it or across the road. Situated in the CBD, yet affording: rowers, yachtsmen, joggers and strollers a pleasant nature experience, even if surrounded by hustle & bustle.
The Park is not always easily accessible by vehicle though, given the chaos caused by Melbourne’s traffic increase and the rapid development of the district, into residential high-rise; parking is also an issue....
