A large lake that used to be a swampy lagoon in the 1800s. Surrounded by sports fields, an aquatic centre golf course, an athletics stadium, bbq areas playgrounds a golfing range, rowing and sailing clubs and a recently added primary school. There's a 5km jogging track. The lake has many water fowl including plenty of black swans. Quite popular for picnics and joggers and early morning cyclists doing circuits. Also popular on New Year's Eve. Nice to visit from June to January. On other months it is taken over by the Australian Grand Prix to construct and deconstruct the temporary stands and buildings for the four day car race. The sporting fields and grounds in general become a very ugly muddy mess for quite a while after they pack up. Unless you're a GP fan and like watching semi trailers and cranes loading and unloading, road blocks and scaffolding, I would avoid visiting during late Feb to May and head to other parks, gardens and sporting fields. Read moreDamn, this place is great for a walk, picnic, bird watching and some city and sky views. Takes about 75 minutes walking for a full loop around. Enough water fountains and refill points for bottles.
Here's a quirky tip; At the boat club right next to the lights, there's a bird meeting everyday at sunset. All ducks, swans and pigeons are present 😉
