I was lucky enough to head along to the Art Centre for Horizons opening community performance and my god, I can not rave about it enough. If you ever get the chance to see a show from the Bangarra Dance Theatre take it. They have such a beautiful way of storytelling through dance that lights up a room. The Art Centre puts on so many amazing performance but the location itself is something to marvel at. The whole place feels like it’s built to host spectacular productions and it sure does. There’s the most beautiful light fixtures in every room and the bars look like the perfect place for a cocktail before a wonderful evening. There’s so much history on display in each room with sets from previous show in glass cases, and old costumes lining the walls. I love how lively it always feels and the warm theatre tones feel so vibrant and alluring. If there’s any place to catch a show it’s in these beautiful halls. After the show you can also get a photo outside of the towering structure above the many theatres which is lit up each night. It’s right on the river which means just across from the original art centre building are breathtaking city views both on the bridge and from above. Climbing up the stairs above Hammer Hall is always a breathtaking sight and well worth a bit of exploration. If you’re in the city looking to explore or a tourist wanting to catch the sights along with a show this is the place to be!

Attended recent Bangarra Dance Theatre show Horizon. Began with finding a car park that was easy on this Friday night late August 2024. Followed Google maps to the entrance, chose the left side driveway and parked just near the entrance to the main building and floor for the show. Well we sat in the stalls down one flight of stairs. There are lifts if you need them. A busy night with almost a full house. Was able to buy a last minute ticket for a friend to join us. Loved the show it was riveting moving and unique as it was a Torres Strait Islander and Māori story and ensemble. Great sound track and visuals. I guess I needed to read the program and afterwards a couple of reviews to fully grasp the meaning behind the movements. Intermission was good, service was cheerful and overall the experience wonderful. I’d like to also say my sister and I had snacks and dinner at the Barre restaurant. With a little encouragement we connected with the staff and enjoyed friendly service throughout. As it was my 67th birthday that day it was nice place to enjoy ourselves. My sister had the duck pate and I had the baba ganoush with hot bread that was fabulous. Also the Hepburn Springs mineral water was the best. Great pre-show destination. It was busy so best to book if you have four or more people. Enjoy the rock and roll museum visit there, lots of memories!

The Arts Centre’s famous spiral is just the tip of an enormous network of underground passages, archives, performance spaces, dressing rooms and offices, extending five floors underground. The friendly host will tell you stories of famous performers who have tread the boards of the Arts Centre’s theatres since it opened in 1984, and tales of backstage mishaps and urban legends from over the years. They’ll also give you an insight into the technical aspects of putting on large-scale shows at the State Theatre, which seats 2,079 people and has a ceiling covered with 75,000 tiny brass domes. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to glimpse sets being constructed for upcoming productions. On our tour a guy had prearranged for some extra excitement by proposing to his partner on the main stage. I'm a regular single participant and consistently have problems with the online booking system. I understand the algorithm is designed to maximise bums on seats and putting people together. However, too often when I choose a single seat in a row that is otherwise full I'm told I can't book it. It doesn't make sense, I'm taking the 1 single seat available and leaving blocks of 2 or more seats open, but instead I have to choose another, usually poorer location seat. It cheeses me off that the algorithm isn't working and feels like another business that discriminates against single people. They're potentially losing $ as I refuse to support poor business practices with my money. Today it was A Midsumma Night's Dream, I'm sure it will be a sell out so who cares right? Certainly not the Arts Centre who continues to use this booking system.

Written on 7/5/2024 Some people may think that the Eiffel Tower has moved to the top of the building. It looks spectacular whether it is in the day or night. The circular structure of the Arts Cetre resembles a Coliseum. The contemporary interior is subtle but inviting. The stage and the general seating are located three floors below the street level. Whike the seating arrangement may be suitable for most purposes such as concerts, recitals and projection screening, any performance such as ballet that involves footwork cannot be enjoyed by audients sitting rows away from the stage. All the seats are on level ground instead of a gentle gradient. The line of sight of auduents further away is blocked by the heads and bodies of audients in front.

Very interesting arts centre. Pink-beige carpeted floor to ceiling halls with the most unsettling dead acoustics. I see how people go crazy in those anechoic chambers. Green room food was bain marie fair with choice of sides including chips steamed veg and salad bar, but at ~$12 for a decent sized meal and suitable vegetable options to keep us alive and scurvy free, I'm very impressed. The loading dock is BY FAR the coolest I've seen, with a 4-storey truck lift salvaged from an aircraft carrier (it's amazing what you can find on Marketplace). Crew here are absolutely fantastic. We were in the black-box venue, but I'm looking forward to trying the Playhouse next time we come. Can definitely recommend making theatre here.
