This is beautiful peaceful restaurant with top quality food. Looking at the reviews here it looks unfairly low rated and perhaps those were the extreme cases. We have been at this restaurant about 6 times over the years so far and it was never disappointing! If anything can be disappointing those would be customers, in my opinion. This restaurant is not for Macdonald goer for sure, it is fine restaurant. The food is rich and flavoursome, with seasonal ingredients. Yes the meat portions can be small but you order something else with it plus you have beautiful bread with butter for a starter. The photo here is what my daughters and myself ordered for our lunch last time. Tagliatelle and pate are entrees and roast potato in duck fat is just a side. We were full afterwords! We did not even have a main meal. Service was also good, we are not people that like someone constantly checking up on us, it is a restaurant and not a babysitting club! We were quite fine with enjoying food and talking between each other. They always find a table for us too, even though they recommend reservations. That is for me accommodating and great service, they are not supposed to slave around us. One of our favourite restaurants in Melbourne, from Melbournians.

After attending the Member’s Exhibition Introduction to Pierre Bonnard and then viewing it, Declan and I dined at the Annie Smither’s pop-up in The Garden Dining Room. I booked this luncheon purely because I had listened to an interview on Melbourne Broadsheet with Annie which impressed me when she talked about her culinary collaboration with the NGV. She talked about her love of seasons and the food each season literally ‘brings to the table’. Annie articulated that her menu would also change as a result of the seasons through which the exhibition would pass. As such she and Bonnard share a love of ‘the table’ and how food nourishes families and friends who are invited to share in the pleasure of these experiences. I wanted the full French experience! I chose the vegan three course option purely because the dishes sounded magnificent and Declan chose the beef option which was superb. The colours of autumn in the gardens surrounding the dining room were ironically almost identical to Bonnard’s palette used in the paintings on display. It was the perfect accompaniment. We will go back for sure ❤️

Executive chef Matt McConnell from Bar Lourinhã has taken over the NGV Garden Restaurant for The Picasso Century. To celebrate the change of season, they are presenting a fresh new menu, bringing a vibrant spring take to classic Spanish flavors. ❤️: The menu features a range of Bar Louinhã’s best tapas including the 🦪 Spicy Mussel Montadito (MY FAV!), 🍞 Broad Bean Montadito, Chistorra & Pork Belly Pintxo. Larger plates include 🐟 Roasted Sardines & Mojo Verde, 🍅 Burrata & Piperrada, and 🍖 Beef Cheek with Buttermilk ‘ajo blanco’. Lastly, end the meal with their amazing dessert—🍮 Pomegranate Crema with Pistachio Praline—SOOO GOOOOOD 😍.

Once, one of my All Time Favourite eateries (see update). Full marks for creativity in every aspect of dining experience. A setting beyond compare: within the NGV's main concourse, perfect place to reflect (next to a pond) overlooking a garden after the aesthetic indulgence of gallery wandering. Attentive staff, silver service. Loved the 3 course menu & glass of wine. Loved the a-la-carte menu for a quick lunch. Update 24 March: It may say Open Till 4, but that means you can dine until 4 only if you order by 2.30 or, as I discovered on my tenth visit (at 2.10 today), they may shut The Kitchen at 2pm if they "have a function." It's time management review signage, Google Maps, and willingness to serve a pastry or cheese platter so neither Eduardo nor I need to be found talking at cross purposes again. Thank God the NGV member lounge is open: free coffee & Anzac biscuits.

Staff are wonderful; helpful, entertaining and they listen rather than assume. The Japanese menu, as a tie-in with the Yayoi Kusama experience, was interesting but could've done with a bit more explanation on the menu. As an example, I had the heirloom tomato but had little idea as to what the blackish 'gravel' on top consisted of. It was delicious, though! I am also not a fan of miso and many of the main meals contained miso. The buckwheat risotto chosen was lovely but you probably need a side salad to cut through the textural ‘sameness '. We then shared a passionfruit 'dots experience’ dessert, which might have worked better in a less shallow receptacle.

A fabulous quiet little restaurant inside the NGV. I highly recommend their latest collaboration with Anne Smithers. Her delicious French cuisine. Gorgeous!
