My dear art connoisseurs, let me regale you with a tale of disappointment and perplexity that is the 2023 M Pavilion designed by the acclaimed Tadao Ando. As I approached this architectural marvel, my expectations were sky-high, only to be dashed upon the rocks of reality.
The lack of program opportunity around the M Pavilion left me flabbergasted. In a city known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, one would expect a structure of such supposed significance to be a focal point for artistic expression and communal engagement. Alas, I found no evidence of this. It felt like an isolated monolith, devoid of purpose or connection to its surroundings.
Moreover, there was the preposterous claim that the concrete structure could be relocated. As a seasoned art enthusiast, I am well aware of the logistical impossibility of moving such a permanent, monolithic structure. The very notion of relocating a concrete pavilion of this magnitude is as absurd as it is laughable.
And let us not forget the spurious promise of 24-hour access—a promise made with all the conviction and veracity of a snake oil salesman. The reality was a stark contrast; the area around the M Pavilion was unceremoniously cordoned off at night, guarded by sentinels who seemed to derive more joy from taking selfies than from actually ensuring access to the pavilion as promised.
In conclusion, my visit to the M Pavilion left me with a sense of bewilderment and disillusionment. Tadao Ando's vision may have been noble in theory, but in practice, it felt woefully disconnected from its surroundings and utterly lacking in substance. This enigma of a pavilion left me with the distinct impression of an artist striving for profundity but ultimately falling short, like a maestro mistaking discord for harmony. Alas, dear connoisseurs, I cannot in good conscience recommend this enigma of...
Read moreTerrible design and the worst yet. Open in November 2021…there is no shade from the sun; no shelter from the rain; no comfortable seating for socialising and no tables for drinks. It lacks character and any practical function that allows social gatherings. Previous years have seen wonderful designs effectively mix both function and form. This year we have an ugly monstrosity where you can’t even sit comfortably. Suggest you take your own chair, table and umbrella. Better yet… head...
Read moreA very memorable experience! The MPavilion 10 is designed by Tadao Ando. His thought process is very much reflected in this simple, soothing and modern mass. The linear slit from the inside feels like a window with moving images. The water reflection on the roof brings a different play of light and creates a different kind of ambience. There is an interplay of light and shadow throughout the day which creates more drama to this...
