FITZROY PAINTING — Attraction in Melbourne

I thoroughly enjoyed the portrait painting class with Yvette Coppersmith. The class was one day in the weekend and it was very well organised. I found Adriane’s Fitzroy Painting studio to be an excellent space to learn. It has a nice friendly vibe and a welcoming ambience.

The class was comprised of practical lessons. They progressed cumulatively from charcoal sketches to a complete self-portrait in oil. I thought it was amazing that so much learning was achieved in a single day.

Yvette is an awesome portrait painter. I was delighted to discover she is refreshingly intelligent and a superb communicator. In the workshop, I thought she hit all the right notes. Her teaching style is straightforward and clear, and her practical demonstrations illuminating. It was a big thrill to watch her technique, the colour choices, the brush strokes. Her demonstration self-portrait came together so quickly and effortlessly. It was really captivating. When it was our turn with the paint, she was equally attentive, and generous, to every one of us with her knowledge. I was stoked with her incisive guidance. It was what I was looking for to take me forward.

I travelled inter-state to attend this class and it was well worth it. Adriane even managed to squeeze in a tutorial for me on colour mixing technique, which I really appreciated. I will return to this excellent studio...

I completed all drawing classes from 1-3 with Julian this year. I started out as a complete beginner who'd watched a few tutorials but could only draw flat, unproportioned shapes.

I finished the final live drawing session last night and I'm stunned at how far I've come. Julian is a fantastic teacher and keeps the sessions fun and light-hearted while providing great feedback through each drawing session. He is approachable, patient and made something that felt overwhelming at first - like drawing a live person - feel possible.

I would say to anyone that is thinking about getting back into drawing or starting out on their journey that you will be happy you jumped into this course. I feel genuinely sad that I've finished and will probably look to do level 3 again next time it...

I really enjoyed doing the course. Very glad that I went with the 4 week course instead of the one day intensive. The studio was beautiful. Right in Fitzroy which was just a nice cool place to wander in. Very easy to get to by PT. People were lovely. I had fun spending a few hours each Saturday learning how to paint in a friendly and supportive environment. The course was very hands on from the start which I liked. Took home two paintings by the end of the course. It was great that the studio offered kit hire. That definitely made life a lot easier. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to give oil...
