The dedication of Steamrail Victoria’s volunteers, in maintaining and running historic Victorian locomotives and rolling stock, is commendable. Their work brings authenticity to journeys aboard carriages that are a rich part of Victoria's history, offering a reminder of the golden age of train travel. This isn't just travel; it's an experience of a bygone era's.

Their biennial open days, held over the Labour Day long weekend are a testament to their commitment to Victorian railway preservation and education. There's a thrill in seeing, smelling, and touching a variety of trains from steam, electric, to diesel — all in operation. It's a sensory treat and a treasure for train enthusiasts young and old.

Their open days provide an interactive, hands-on opportunity to delve into locomotive history, perfect for families and history buffs. Don’t forgot to watch as they locomotives, chugging along, echoing with the rhythmic pulse of the the pistons, bringing the romance of the rails alive.

Beyond the open days, Steamrail Victoria’s excursions encapsulate the nostalgia of railway trips. Their annual Snow Train whisks passengers off to a winter wonderland, weekenders and the Suburban Ramblers offer a unique view of Melbourne's metropolitan tracks.

In our fast-paced world, Steamrail Victoria allows you to pause and appreciate the journey itself. For those eager to rediscover the magic of traditional train travel, a Steamrail trip is an essential experience.

Steamrail Victoria is always on the lookout for volunteers to help continue their extraordinary work. Whether you’re a railway enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates heritage and history, contributing your time can make a significant difference.

Join the dedicated team and be part of preserving Victoria’s vibrant...

After booking tickets a month in advance, I suddenly had a death in my immediate family and was unable to attend. After emailing and calling multiple times, during Monday to Friday business hours, Jeremy finally emailed me back. Not only was Jeremy blunt and dismissive of my current emotional state and bereavement but he only offered one 'alternative solution' which did not align with our availabilities. Which lead to us having to organise days off at short notice at our respective jobs. However 4 days before our new ticket dates, my travelling companion fell ill and tested positive to Covid. Once again we both emailed and called (leaving messages) and had to wait days for a response. Sadly the only person responding was Jeremy. Jeremy once again offered only one 'alternative solution' which would not have helped as there was only a 3 day gap between our current tickets and our new proposed ones. Jeremy has made it clear that Steamrail Victoria do not care if their passengers have an infectious disease. He has also stated that their passengers are unable to read and even though their phone recording states they offer full refunds when someone has covid symptoms, they do not honour that. Disappointed in the fact that a volunteer ran organisation wouldn't even offer us our ticket value in a credit to be used at a later date. Jeremy was adamant that he was unable to move our tickets to a lesser value or higher value (and we pay the difference) experience as this is something...

If you’re a lover of history, trains, or just looking for a unique and unforgettable day out, I highly recommend Steamrail Victoria. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was nostalgic and vibrant — the sight, sound, and even smell of the old steam engines was like stepping back in time.

The volunteers and staff were incredibly passionate and knowledgeable. They took the time to chat, answer questions, and share fascinating stories about the locomotives and the history of Victorian railways. It’s clear they genuinely care about preserving this amazing piece of history for future generations.

We took a steam train ride from Melbourne and it was nothing short of magical. The carriages were beautifully restored and comfortable, and watching the countryside roll by with the rhythmic sound of the steam engine was both relaxing and exciting. It’s a fantastic experience for both adults and kids — our whole family loved it.

The heritage trains themselves are immaculately maintained and incredibly photogenic. Whether you're into photography, railways, or just something different from the usual weekend activities, this ticks every box.

Steamrail Victoria offers not just a ride, but a full experience. It’s a moving museum, powered by dedicated people and full of heart. Can’t wait to go back again for another...

Step back into our rich steam heritage with a visit to the Newport Workshops. The open day they held over the weekend was excellent. I counted 9 locos from the Y class from the 1880s to the mighty R class. They had 4 K class's in steam and showed them off in the parade. A nice fleet. The buildings are home to different groups dedicated to the task of restoring and maintaining our railway heritage. The buildings are all heritage listed and show a glimpse into our once thriving industrial past. Its something that should be maintained and cared for, for future generations. Steamrail operates its steam tours out of these workshops. Its here at the workshops that all the maintenance etc is carried out. Steam locomotives needs lots of care and most of it is done by volunteers. While the open day is only held every 2 years Steamrail runs a variety of tours every year Steamrail has been given 5 years more lease after which Victrack can retake the whole lot. Once Vicktrack has done this there is little doubt that they will sell off the land, let the buildings fall into disrepair and turn as much of it into ugly apartments as they can. Support Steamrail by going on a tour and through social media. Keep the past alive!

I went on a stream train to Ballarat & back, it is awesome as all kids loved it. My partner & I went yesterday with our 2 kids to the opening day which we enjoyed except right at the end where we left with 2 crying kids. We understood that the steam trains have whistles & are a little loud but there is a horn above doors 10 & 11 that went off 3 times in a row that not only scared us but most people around us. Another thing is the cannon that they fired for no other reason but to add entertainment to something it has nothing related to steam trains. When we complained to management, Lionel very rudely said "There are signs up saying how loud things are" but wasn't a sign at all when we looked plus he was rude to a co-worker by telling her to go back to her train after she was trying to console my son. On a finishing note we had a good day but it was just not wheelchair & pram friendly also needs a bit more rides but an awesome day out.
