Miss Porter's House — Attraction in Newcastle-Maitland

What a fabulous experience this was visiting Miss Porter's House.

Hidden in King Street, this little gem is a true time capsule, offering up the most interesting and delightful insights into the life of a family in Newcastle spanning over a century.

My mother and aunt, both elderly, were transported back to a very familiar time, and spent informative time with the volunteers here whom I can't praise highly enough. They were full of knowledge and their fondness for the house and its fascinating contents was obvious.

It is rare to see the lives of ordinary people so well preserved as they are in this house. We came across the house by (happy) accident while passing through Newcastle en route to Melbourne.. So glad we did. It’s a beautiful cottage from an aesthetic point of view (with lots of impressive details such as stencilling on the wooden ceilings), but is also full of fascinating daily objects used by the Porter family.
