South Beach is one of the best spots in Perth for a relaxed day by the ocean. The beach itself is clean, spacious, and perfect for both families and individuals looking to unwind. The water is usually calm and clear, making it ideal for a refreshing swim, and the views of Fremantle and the marina add a really nice backdrop.
What really stands out here is how well set up the area is. There are plenty of shaded grassy areas with BBQs, picnic tables, and playgrounds, so it’s easy to spend an entire afternoon without needing to leave. The walking paths along the beach are great for a casual stroll or bike ride, and it’s also very dog-friendly — seeing happy dogs running along the sand adds to the atmosphere.

There's adequate space both on the sand and in the water, as the beach is less popular than other beaches. On either side of South Beach are dog beaches, so you can bring furry friends along. When I went there, it was calm and good fun with mates. We played king of the pack in the water with a vortex and tennis balls, jumped off the pontoon, sun tanned on the plush soft sand, and played beach cricket on the grassy area next to the massive parking lot. If you prefer waves however, better to go to a different beach. But this one is for families, dogs, and for calm, relaxing and fun trips...
Read moreBest swimming beach in Freo! The main beach is in the middle with two dog beaches either side (C.Y. O'connor beach to the left and the yacht club beach to the right). Plenty of parking but if it gets crowded you can park on the big oval. There are 2 Cafés. One by the far left parking area and the other is in the middle. Would recommend getting some drinks and fish & chips from down the road and having a sundowner. If you want to hire some Stand Up Paddle boards you can do so from SOS Surf Co. - a 5 minute walk...
