Popped by Sunday morning around 9:30AM with my partner on a whim hoping to get something to eat before hitting the beach… Only have one word to describe it: WOW! Had a server seat us and explain it all to us while getting some water ready. We were seated outside so we could catch a nice breeze. The atmosphere is amazing, it had awesome beachy vibes and a great selection of music. We ordered two breakfast sandwiches. We contemplated ordering a drink from their extensive catalogue of cocktails but decided to stick with water. We were informed that the filling of the sandwich changes each week and that this week was pork belly. My fav! Part of us expected a sad piece of bread with a sliver of meat and far too much salad as per most restaurants in Freo, and we were blown away when our sandwiches arrived. It was absolutely loaded and it was in that moment we realised how astronomically hungry we were. Thick, juicy fatty cuts of pork belly (crackle included!) laid over a bed of salad (just the right amount) lovingly arranged over a perfectly tangy and creamy guacamole. I tasted a bit of maybe something pickled but honestly I devoured it like a starved horse too quick to tell what was fully in there. A lot of restaurants have a flaw of having too many heavy ingredients that bog down the sandwich and make you feel like your pores are oozing enough grease to put KFC out of business. That was NOT the case here; every element of the sandwich worked in perfect harmony, a balance achieved through careful curation of grease, tang, sweet and savoury. Despite hounding down the sandwich at such a speed that would bring a grown man to his knees, I was delighted at how fresh it was. It was not heavy. It was not light. I was not left feeling overly full. Nor did I feel a lingering hunger. It was just right. It was perfection, nestled between perfectly toasted and buttered bread. I’d sell my soul to feast on a sandwich this good again. Thankfully I wouldn’t need to, I’d simply need to offer a reasonably priced $18. Worth. Every. Cent. We WILL be back. tl;dr The Mexican sandwich will change how you see sandwiches for the rest of your life....
Read moreThe minute you wait in line outside for dinner (no bookings taken) and see glimpses of the green lush flora hanging from the ceiling and catch sight of the Aloe Vera and delicately placed cactus around the garden beds which, can only be described as quintessential Mexican, you get the feel that something is a bit different going on in there that is not just ‘Mexican themed’.
You soon get shown to your table then hear appropriate music playing in the background for this type of restaurant and suddenly see small plates of food being delivered from the kitchen. You see the smiles of the people receiving said plates and the foodie inside you acknowledges that the chefs get it here. Having been to Mexico in the 90’s and been lucky enough to taste delicious off the beaten track, traditional coastal mexican food (I recall street kids try to sell me an armadillo claiming it tastes amazing - true story!) Anyway, I never ever thought I would taste that type of South American food again, unless I went back. However here on our doorstep in South Freo we have something that can take you back to the old country of Mexico but adding a modern delicious twist. The owner and head chef, through his years of experience of serving food truck mexican delights have crafted something special. Expect amazing zinging flavours, brightly coloured food and do taste the GF + vegetarian dishes as they are next level!
Wash your meal down with a wonderfully crisp and light cerveza or if you prefer a cheeky tequila and or a perfectly on point tasty cocktail, (non alcoholic cocktails available also). Dont expect a corona thrown down in front of you by an unhappy disgruntled Perth student who has no idea of what customer service is. (Sorry to those students that do know what customer service is, we love you, but you are few and far between in Perth). While table service is relaxed, it’s deliberate and friendly. After all that’s what you get in rural Mexico right? Anyway, this place has to be tried at least once. Go on treat yourself mejo’s…you won’t be...
Read moreA seriously awesome restaurant with an incredibly good menu and a really good price. We walked past and walked in because of the terrific atmosphere and vibe inside where it was cozy and clearly a little piece of freo culture. We were greeted with great service and freindly and layed back staff. The kitchen is completely open, and you can sit across for the chefs as they prepare the meals if that's what you'd like. The food was delicious, our orders came out a little staggered and some of the items got forgotten in the hustle and bustle of the wait staff but it wasn't a huge issue for us. The cocktails were well presented and done well, the food is great for people who are little adventurous with Mexican food with strong flavours and some banging chilly in some dishes. The fresh seafood was amazing definitely ask for the chilli mussel and tequila combo to start or finish your night off ;). Bathrooms were nice, lighting was fairly dim but no troubles reading the menu. They had a handful of large tables for a group of as many as 12 but it seems to suit the 4 person range outside and always space for couples. Place is layed back,- not so much suit and tie as much as modest night out kinda vibe. You might also be surprised how much you get for a $6 or $8 dish! But the wait time was about 30 min or longer on the busy night we are there. We are going back to try the rest of the menu, everything we saw coming out of the kitchen was a little piece price of art. For the vegetarians the place isn't super accommodating but who I was with was able to find a few things on the menu to suit.(just significantly...
