The Homebush Shipwreck Lookout hidden within the Badu Mangroves is one of those places that feels both mysterious and breathtaking. Tucked away in the middle of the forest, the path suddenly opens to a wide view overlooking the Parramatta River. From here, you can see the old shipwrecks slowly being reclaimed by nature, their rusted frames blending with the trees and water.

What makes this spot so special is the atmosphere — it has a slightly paranormal, otherworldly quality. Surrounded by mangroves, listening to the birds, and looking out over the wrecks resting in the river, it feels like a place where time has slowed down and the past lingers in the air.

It’s a perfect lookout point to pause, take in the view, and reflect. Whether you come for photography, a walk in nature, or just to enjoy something unique, the Homebush Shipwreck Lookout offers a hauntingly beautiful glimpse of history set against the wild charm of the...

Shipwreck No.2 - SS Heroic

A steel-hulled steam tug boat weighing 258 tonnes and 38.1 long. It was built in the UK in 1909 for Thomas Fenwick (tugboat operators) of Sydney. In 1911, it towed and ex-French three-mustered warship 'Eure' to Sydney. It was commissioned by the British Admiralty during WWI (renamed Epic) to engage in rescue work off the Scilly Isles. In 1919, it was back in Sydney working as a tug and during WWII it rescued the freighter 'Allara' when it got torpedoed off Sydney. Circa 1940, it assisted in manoeuvring RMS Queen Mary in Sydney Harbour. By 1973, it was sold to J.B Mullins who intended to rename the vessel 'Bustler II' but somehow ended up in...

It's funny how someone invented a name and a history to this place. It's been there for ages and never had a name. It's got no significant historical story to it. A ship Was decommissioned and left there. It rested and sank. But somehow someone marked it as a historical landmark and Google accepted it. It's a nice place don't get me wrong, but now it's official. You can see the shipwreck from Both sides of the river but somehow this place is the official looking point. They even suggest buying tickets for it like it's an...

I was thrilled to discover this easy walk to see what’s left of the old barges that have been abandoned here. They were used to deliver bricks to the city from the brick pit. One barge is easy to see off the track. There is a free telescope to see one of the wrecks but it doesn’t work very well. You can explore as much or as little as you like on the extensive good walking tracks that go on from here

This spot is alright for long exposures and astrophotography is actually somewhat possible here. You will probably need an ultrawide lens to capture the Milky Way over either the nearby shipwreck or the lookout itself as it's in an awkward position. The skies are very light polluted, as expected. It is rated a Bortle 7.
